Thread: opening an AMP

Prepare your work area. Drugs packaged in glass ampules need to remain in a sterile environment because they are typically injected into the body. Lay a clean towel on your work surface, wash your hands and have plenty of alcohol wipes available.

Check to see if your ampule has been pre-scored. A painted band around the narrow neck of the ampule usually means it is ready to open without scoring. If your ampule is not scored, you should draw a finely serrated knife or file around the narrow part of the ampule to weaken the glass so it can be snapped open.

Protect your hands from broken glass by wrapping the ampule in a paper towel, light cloth or piece of gauze. If the ampule does not break cleanly, this prevents you from getting cut and helps contain the glass shards.

Hold the ampule with both hands, with one thumb against the narrow top section. Pull the bottom of the ampule towards you while pushing the top section away from you with easy, even pressure. A light pressure applied correctly will cleanly snap the ampule open, while using too much force can cause it to shatter.

Unwrap the opened ampule and discard the top. Your medication is now ready to be removed from the ampule as directed by your physician.

Wait! You open amp vials? I usually just pop them in my mouth and chew it all up like bubble gum.

First cycle I did was omnadren amps I etched the neck with a razor then held it with one hand and snap it with the other.

It kind of tripped me out the first time I opened an AMP because when i cracked the top, some glass spilled down into the liquid. It was just BAC water so i poured it out.

I'm just glad it wasn't gear.

My second one crushed in my hand (ya that was fun).

You need to find and buy and use FILTER NEEDLES.

These are typically 19 gauge, 1.5 inches, with a 5 micron filter in the hub area of the needle, so when you draw a solution from a glass ampule, you filter out the glass particles.

The smallest of the glass particles that will fall into your solution will be around 10 microns, so the 5 µm filter in the needle will be fine. The 0.45 µm syringe filters you are used to seeing are overkill, and way too expensive at $5-$7 each. Filter needles are around $45 for a box of 100 (0.45 cents each).

Most amps have a weak spot on the neck (some marked with black dot), just grip the amp in your fist in a thumbs up position with the neck pressed against your thumb, turn the amp so the weak spot is facing your thumb and close your thumb thumb war style.
If your too much of a mary jane to open the damn thing then score it a little on one side of the neck to make a weak spot.

As unclem said buy an opener, so much easier. Small blade already in the opener and there it is, no need to even touch the amp. JMO.
