Police make first arrest in steroid investigation

WAYNE – The culmination of a months-long investigation has resulted in what’s likely to be the first of several arrests for distribution of steroids at township gyms and schools.

Michael Massaro, 24, of Harmer Terrace, was arrested on his way into World Gym at the Wedgewood Plaza recently when officers presented him with search warrants, said Wayne Police Capt. James Clarke.

An unspecified amount of four different types of anabolic steroids and a hypodermic needle were discovered in Massaro’s vehicle and his house, Clarke said.

Massaro was charged with four counts of steroids and possession of paraphernalia, being the hypodermic needle. He faces fines of up to $35,000 and/or a jail sentence of three to five years, said Clarke.

"The investigation included the Wayne Police Department, special operations unit, and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and is currently ongoing. As more information is developed further arrests could be made," stated Clarke.

Massaro was released on his own recognizance and will appear in Wayne municipal court for an arraignment on Oct. 28.

Det. Michael Zaccone was the lead investigator for the Wayne Police Department, and the DEA, out of the Newark field division, assisted.

what a fucking waste of tax payer money...my guess is that local LE is getting in on these types of cases simply because many get to keep all of the monies seized.
