Defence warns on steroid dangers

THE Defence Force has launched a campaign about the dangers of abusing anabolic steroids in the wake of several special forces soldiers being sent home in disgrace from Afghanistan.

The latest navy newspaper contains a fact sheet detailing the side effects of abusing the drug, warning that it can cause infertility, heart attacks, the development of breast tissue in men and enlarged clitorises in women.

The Age revealed last year that seven special forces soldiers had tested positive for anabolic steroids in Afghanistan or been found in possession of the muscle-building drug. All were sent home and asked to show cause why they should not be sacked.

Because of periods of boredom and inactivity, soldiers in Afghanistan spend much of their spare time working out at improvised gyms at the bases and order protein supplements, which are delivered to them on the front line.

The supplement companies derive so many customers from the Defence Force that some send the troops windcheaters and singlets with their logo on the front and Operation Slipper - the Australian mission in the Middle East - on the back.

Some troops also give in to the temptation to boost their muscle mass in an illicit fashion.

''There are risks associated with both the injectable and tablet forms of the drug,'' the fact sheet warns. ''It can be very dangerous to combine steroid use with some other drugs, such as insulin, human growth hormone or amphetamines.''

The commander of Defence's health command, Major-General Paul Alexander, said steroid use could be detected weeks after the drugs were taken.

I just finish serving 10 years in the U.S. military. Never even ONCE did I hear about/see someone discharged to AAS use. Is it against the rules? Yes. Could you be busted? Yes. Are our men and women using? Yes. I've NEVER seen someone booted for AAS use in the US military. You'd pretty much have to get caught with the product on your person or in your room. It's not even tested for.

I think all military should be able to use steroids legally (and us) so that we have uber big, jacked, tan soldiers so no one would want to fuck with us. Plus if they were ever to become a POW, they could use their uber jackness to break out of the chains and kill anyone holding them.

First of all I served in the US Army, did not go to war though.

Secondly, what war besides WWII, did anyone in the US fight that was for our freedom?

There are some mighty fine people serving in our Armed Forces regardless of whether we are for or against a particular war or conflict. There are way too many young punk p*ssies in my town and every other town who steal our oxygen and pollute the environment when they breathe/speak. They are pieces of human waste and do nothing all day except mooch cigarette money from their mommies. They don't have the balls to join the military and they're too stupid to contribute anything productive to society. So I got a ton of respect for those who grab their sacks and actually join up.
