What are you taking for BAD acne?

Alright so I have some somewhat bad acne, maybe not bad to some people but I want it gone. I plan on going to a doctor but before I go I like to be armed with different solutions so I can ask the doctor about and be knowledgeable instead of going in completely dumb. I know about accutane, took it when I was younger but with it being potentially dangerous I'd like to try other things that may be similar.

What are you on, and how well has it worked? I'm looking for things written by script only, not OTC.

I stared using salicylic acid facial cleanser and benzoyl peroxide products long time ago. I think they help a bit, but I don't think they complete get rid of acne for most people.

I looked more into it and came across this. It's a glycolic acid chemical peel that promotes collagen synthesis and unclogs pores.

Amazon.com: Glycolic Acid 35% Gel Peel, 30ml (Professional): Beauty

I just did my first peel couple days ago and my skin seems to be smoother and slight less acne.

Also using, lactic acid moisturizer at night time seems to help as well.

    Amazon.com: Lac-Hydrin Five Moisturizing Lotion, 8 oz (226 g): Beauty

However, if your acne is bactria related, then you might have to jump on some anti-biotics. You can also try retin-a creams which is prescription.

Accutane 20mg ED is what I'm using. Too early to tell results. I have heard good things following this protocol.

Accutane is incredible. I used it as a 20something and it was truly a miracle drug. They took blood regularly to monitor any possible damage.

Have a friend who used it recently to knock down what he felt was too much oil on his face. The docs apparently can dial things in a lot more accurately today than they could in 1983. My sides were harsh -- dry as hell skin, cracking lips, alopecia, but my friend has had no visible side effects other than the intended one, reducing the oiliness of his skin.

Best of luck with whatever regimen you choose to pursue.

My doctor gave me some doxycycline. It has worked wonders. I still have acne, but it's much better. There's almost none on my face and very little on my arms. Right now, on cycle, I have some on my chest and arms, but it's the best it's been on cycle. Along with it I use the clean and clear kit to wash everything and put the lotion on my face. On my arms and body I clean with stridex wipes.

Sometimes a low dose antibiotic is prescribed for acne, works well for some people. The antibiotic such as doxycycline kills bacteria in the pimple but you may still get inflamed areas. It just help them to heal faster.

accutane was also fantastic and I did not have one single side effect (got lucky I guess)

and yes it was real because the acne disappeared

seriously a great OTC supplement is grape seed extract

It helps keep my skin clear, it REALLY does help. Not sure if it'll eliminate severe acne but for anyone who has some nuisance acne it really works.

i read up on accutane, decided it wasnt for me. I was in the same situation as you. I used a bodywash in the shower and cheap proactive knockoff at walmart(kit). Also been going in the sun more to dry skin up. WORKED WONDERS! My skin is alot clearer and i had a few big patches, all gone

I've had acne for 12 years already. Right now I'm 20 & completely clear ever since 4 months ago when I was prescribed Benzaclin by my doctor which is 5% Benzoyl Peroxide & 1% Clindamycin.

It literally got better after just ONE day as I kept putting it on my face. & It works great if your on cycle especially if you have very oily skin such as myself.

Here is my skin routine... only before bed

    1. Wash face for 1 min with White Dove Soap (OTC)
    2. Wait 5 minutes & apply Benzaclin on troubled areas
    3. Wait 10 minutes for Benzaclin to dry & cover with *Cetaphil Moisturizer* (OTC)

    4. Do this everyday for 1 month & I promise your acne will be completely clear.
& if you'd like you can do it in the morning also, with faster & better results.

I noticed improvement the first month. I wasn't on cycle then though. I think the clean and clear and wipes are a big part of it though. If I slack on one of those, the body acne gets worse.

I'm 3 weeks into my Accutaine 20mg ED.

I had very mild acne last cycle towards the end.

So I've started taking the Accutaine with zero acne in hopes to prevent it ever from returning. I also eat a LOT of fish oil so Less oil in the skin the better.

My plan is to do this for 6 months, then I should be permanately fixed from acne.

Or I may just do another 6 month run next summer...

    We'll see how it goes.

But yeah, do something, acne just sux... Unacceptable.

Do you guys get it legally or do you buy it on the net (Accutane)? I'm curious because I don't think most insurance will cover this. I used it when I was younger don't remember much from it, but I guess it's the route I will go to get this cleared up ASAP.

    Sorry, I missed this.

Not sure, but he had a great experience with it. He said his skin was too oily and was pleased with the results. Doc adjusted the dose to meet his goal without allowing all the nasty side effects I saw (cracked skin, alopecia, etc.) when I took it decades ago.

Stay away from accutane, they are under an arbitrary lawsuit for reasons of this drug being linked to crohns disease and a few others. Google "accutane lawsuit". I would read on it before taking it.
