Steroid Use is Skyrocketing in Australia According to the Media By Millard Baker ~ source
The use of anabolic steroids is skyrocketing according to media reports. The claims seem to be based on two sources: customs seizures data and interviews with personal trainers at gyms in Australia.
Government statistics show a dramatic increase in the number of seizures made by customs in the most recent year. The Australian Customs and Border Protection Service announced that it had made 2695 seizures involving anabolic steroids and human growth hormone as of July 2010. This figure represents a 155 percent increase over the 1054 seizures made in the corresponding period last year.
An Australian customs spokesperson blamed the increase on the explosion of internet websites selling steroids from within jurisdictions that have lax regulations governing the sale of anabolic steroids and other prescription drugs. The spokesperson pointed the finger as Thailand, Hong Kong, Bulgaria, China as well as the United States and United Kingdom.
“The majority of performance-enhancing drugs are detected at the international mail gateways and are generally from internet sites located in overseas jurisdictions which do not exercise the same controls as Australia,” a Customs spokesperson said.
The Newcastle Herald reported that steroid use had increased dramatically this year as gym-goers prepared for the Australian summer. Their source for this assertion was personal trainer Marc Hingston who claimed that 25 to 30 percent of the trainers that work out at his gym were using anabolic steroids. He told the Herald that other health clubs may not want to report such high numbers to avoid looking bad in a competitive industry.
‘‘I know that others [fitness centres] are having big problems but I don’t know whether or not they are willing to talk about it, because it’s such a competitive industry,’’ according to Hingston.
When interviewed this month, Hingston claimed that steroid use had increased from about 5% to 25-30% over the past 18 months at his gym.
This was not the first time personal trainer Marc Hingston was interviewed. He has become the Newcastle Herald’s expert on local trends in steroid use. Nine months ago, Hingston told the newspaper that the market for steroids ‘”had become bigger than ecstasy” over the previous 18 months.
While government reports of steroid use in the United States have shown a dramatic decline in self-reported steroid use over the past seven years, it is possible that trends are different in Australia. It is also possible the so-called epidemic in Australian steroid use may simply reflect the recent hysteria that seems to have surfaced in the Australian media.
I've definitely noticed this trend on other boards though
yea to a certain extent, i actually think zyzz's rise to fame through steroids had an effect on the number of users out there. i already started getting into aas before hearing about the guy, but his success with them certainly made it feel all the more right to tell you the truth.
what pisses me off is all these advertisements on magazine covers and billboards that display juiced up fitness models trying to sell some shitty pre-workout supp as if that's what got them their physique. people see through the bullshit now and know what they're really taking, and dive into steroids to do "the real thing". all the media does is advertise the perfect body, yet the government/DEA acts all surprised wondering why steroid use is on the rise...
Yep so true, everyone's goal physique is an obvious juicer and then people wonder why they're dissapointed when they don't reach it. It definitely seems people are becoming more aware of just what's possible naturally and what isn't. Zyzz was idolized by alot of people over there who otherwise would've never considered it, and I'm sure he helped push a few of them along. Or maybe it's the opposite, gear use is rising in Australia and zyzz just jumped on board. Either way it seems like 75% of the time you see a guy with a really good physique you're like "I wonder if he cycles", oh "Location: Australia"... makes sense. Not on these boards obviously but you know what I'm referring to

almost all the people who's physiques i've been impressed by but originally thought were natty, ended up not being natty. i used to think greg plitt was natty. now i have no doubt he isnt. thats not to say im ignorant and that im gonna go off and say "oh yea he's juicing" about some guy because he's jacked, but i've gotten so used to that being the case that it doesnt surprise me anymore.
it's like that doctor said in the steroid documentary. "other than pedophilia, this is the most secretive behavior i've ever encountered."
Same here, all the guys I used to look at and say "I'll look like that someday, just good diet/dedication etc." ... now I look and it's obvious they cycle. I completely understand wanting to keep it a secret with all the hate for AAS use out there, wanting to get sponsorships etc. but it is very misleading. On the bright side it pushes the young kids to work hard, on the other it can be pretty discouraging when you've put in 3-4 years in the gym and are still nowhere near that level. It would be alot easier if there wasn't so much misinformation out there, and preferably if it were legalized. I'm sure it sucks to put in years and years of hard work, perfect diet every day etc. and then have someone say "oh you just look like that because you juice, I'd be even bigger if I did it.".... yeah ok guy, keep telling yourself that
Our trained eye tells us who is and who is not juicing. Some guys I hear boast of their all-natural when I know they are full of shit. However, when I'm asked by fellow gym members, personal trainers, co-workers, etc how I got my physique I quickly begin discussing diet, training and creatine (and try not to smile).
On the same note, there is no way we can get our enhanced physiques with only aas. So I'm not totally full of shit when I discuss diet, training and creatine as I'm asked to detail my routine that got me what I have. If diet and training were not on point, I would not have gotten the extra benefit of the gear. That being said, there are mutated "way-too-much-juice" gorillas that I see around town who ACT and SPEAK like they are all-natural when even my grandmother would know they are full of shit because they are dripping with oily skin, pockmarks in their shoulders, disproportionate body with Ridiculous chicken legs but 20" super vascular arms and delts larger than my ass cheek. At least try to achieve some proportion and symmetry for God's sake.
I dont mind telling people that I put in the hardwork when they ask. Because I did. The gear was just a catalyst. It helps but without dedication you get nothing.
Aus customs suck, they are very hard to get packs through.

is there a reason why some countries are more strict than others? why is it so easy to get it through US customs yet hard to get it past australia or canadian customs?
Living in australia is great but yes our customs suck. I have no idea how the find time to go through everything!
And the reason more people are trying to mail them in is because local sources either charge the earth (180 dollars for 10ml of E or deca etc) or there just is none out there, or the shit you can buy is filthy and not pure.
So guys go through the mail. I know people who are lucky enough to get vials through but the most use stealth packing.
That Marc hingston is a idiot just trying to get his face on TV, we have people like him and the media who alays make things worse than they are like a scratch is an war wound.
Steroids have been around and been big here for a long time, its just now that people are making a point of going after it.
When they get bored of this or have thrashed it enough it will all blow down and no one is going to care.
Hate the media and hate these idiots who think gear is as evil as narcatics.
