Two St. Charles County men accused of distributing human growth hormone
ST. CHARLES COUNTY - Two body builders who frequented gyms in St. Charles County are accused of buying and distributing human growth hormone from China.
A federal grand jury indicted Gregory L. Loomans, 40, of St. Charles, and Keith E. Ashabranner, 32, of O'Fallon, Mo., on one felony count each of conspiracy to possess and distribute the drugs.
Loomans was arraigned this morning; his attorney could not be reached immediately. Ashabranner is expected to appear in court later this week.
The indictment said Loomans set up a post office box address in St. Charles to receive drug packages from China, and Ashabranner handled money transfers. Court records accuse him of making five transfers totaling $13,865.
The men injected themselves with the drugs and sold some to other body builders, the indictment said.
Boxes containing the drugs had inaccurate labels saying they contained "mechanical parts" of low monetary value, the indictment said.
Investigators said they intercepted two packages from China in March of 2010. One contained 320 vials of HGH, they said. The other contained 49 vials of another drug.
If the men are convicted, the charges carry a maximum penalty of five years in prison and up to $250,000 in fines.
