Many guys join the military because they are fucking redneck morons to begin with. Becoming a soldier simply provides them with a free ticket to be the pathetic asshole that they are.
A horrific environment such as war can certainly bring out the worst in people. Obviously not all soldiers are tarred with the same brush but a small minority of them are assholes to begin with and the witnessing of violence eveyday seems to de-humanize others that wouldn't normally do this kind of thing.

Wow. I was honestly hoping the real story was anything but that.

I don't know why people are surprised by this kind of action. It's not the kids that join the military do so because they have a lot going for them. If you barely graduated high school, cant get into college, and have no skills to offer the world you can join the military and at least move out of your moms basement and collect a paycheck.

Its not like it was 50 - 80 years ago, when we were fighting the Japanese and Nazi's to stop them for taking over the world. The Military has become a jobs program for the disadvantaged.
