I had a buddy (who owned an industry related business) do this when a friend of ours created his new user forum. The software scanned a competitive forum in a related hobby and harvested the emails. Then my buddy, who had great brand/product recognition in said hobby, sent out a blast email from his business saying check out this cool new user forum. They only received minimal blow back from it at the time.
