From what I understand, glutamine has many anti-catabolic properties.That is, it helps prevent the loss of lean muscle tissue during periods of intense stress(i.e. weight training or severe dieting).Also, I have heard that it reinforces the immune system.I like to take it during a hypertrophy phase as I am always able to put on a substantial amount of lean tissue while using it.There was a short-term study done by a sports doctor several years ago who put a group of wrestlers on a very low-cal diet while supplementing them with glutamine and he found that even though they were ingesting a minimal amount of calories, they still maintained a positive nitrogen balance(which is key to increasing or atleast maintaining muscle mass).He attributed this to the glutamine supplementation.Personaly, I take five grams before and after a training session.
