Whats the difference between a regular Idaho potatoe and say red potatoe? Would regular potatoes be alright to eat?

Actually red potatoes are better than russett. I prefer new potatos over the three. If cutting though, sticking with sweet potatoes is your best choice.

Jodi, what are new potatos?? I don;t think I have ever heard of that?

new potatoes? yumm! Patrick, they are just as titled- 'New" crop, small size, a wettet potato.
I had red potatoes last night, the colored ones have a lower GI, sweet being the best as Jodi mentioned(and more flavourful IMO). The white potatoes would be fine post workout since they are high glycemic.

The swedish people are crazy about new potatoes :D It's in so many traditional summer dishes it practicly grows out of our ears  I only have em on cheat days, but I sure do love em :lick:

also remember that how a potato is cooked greatly effects the GI...

How a potatoe is cooked? I usually throw them on the grill for about 40 minutes, is that alright? Also, can someone point me to this glycemic index stuff on regular potatoes?

Got GI indices for potatoes mashed, boiled, baked -- I think even for ones grown different places.

Another thing, the GI is not an immovable figure. GI is greatly affected by meal combination. Hence, if you eat your potatoes with protein and perhaps, if you are not a follower of Berardi, fat (as you should be), the GI of potatoes alone is pretty much irrelevant.

New potatoes are my favorite. I love them sliced up, drizzled with a bit of olive oil and lemon and dill and baked :nanner:

They are small very thin almost clear skin. You don't peel them. You eat them skin and all. They are lower gi than russett and red.

they are just white potaotes right? At least that is what I think they call them at the store.

No they aren't the same. White potatoes are big new potatoes are ususally smaller than a tennis ball but bigger than a golf ball.

okay, thanks....I'll keep my eyes peeled.....hahaha

New potatoes look just like the red ones from what I can see in the picture Jodi posted. how many of those new potatoes do you eat per meal? I know theyre fairly small.

yukon gold is a popular brand of the new potatoes. if you see those - you know you found them.

the main difference is the skin. the skin on the new potatoes is thin like red potatoes (but not red) instead of the thicker skin on baking potatoes
