Tinley biz owner gets 9 yrs for smuggling steroids

The owner of a Tinley Park business, sued for swindling the elderly to buy lingerie, has been sentenced to nine years in prison in connection with a steroid smuggling ring.

Rick Boros, 66, was one of the owners of Purchase Meds, Inc., which secretly imported anabolic steroids and other prescription drugs from Mexico and Belize, hiding the substances in women's shoes and electronics between 2003 and 2006, according to a federal indictment filed in the Northern District of Illinois.

Federal authorities said Boros obtained fraudulent prescriptions from doctors for customers' steroids and medications such as Xanax.

On Friday, U.S. District Court Judge Joan B. Gottschall sentenced Boros to 108 months behind bars, plus five years' probation once he's released, according to an IRS spokeswoman.

Boros, of Hinsdale, who also went by the alias Vince Kwiatkowski, was convicted in May 2008 on multiple felony charges.

He also was sued by the Securities and Exchange Commission in 2008, accused of bilking elderly investors out of more than $1.7 million he used on extravagant gifts for his wife and secretary, and for his daughter's college tuition.

The SEC charged that Boros, as operator of North American Mining Ventures, convinced investors to sink their money into gold and silver mines in Durango, Mexico.

He spent the money, the SEC alleged, on "women's accessories" at an Orland Park Lover's Lane store, in addition to paying off personal credit card debt, maintaining three BMWs, and paying for spas and salon services.

Boros remains behind bars in the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Chicago's Loop.
