That depends on whom you ask. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Wednesday that more of half of U.S. adults use dietary supplements -including multivitamins, minerals [...]

Given the above, how concerning is this: First Dietary Supplement Caucus briefing hosted for the 112th Congress

I can see your choice to take all these stupid supplements being taken away and now you have to get a script from your doc to get some Vit C.

    Red face

I don't wish to sound like a bitch, but this country USA has been quoted as having such the obesity problem...where do the supplements come in? You'd think, that then we'd have less of the health and obesity problems. @ least in heart disease.

Because people are missing 3 things:
    - understanding of basic nutrition
    - a little personal responsibility
    - patience

Everyone is looking for and willing to pay major dollars on things marketed to them as quicky fixes, but won't give up fast food and sitting on their asses all day.

And we've further encouraged it by making clothes bigger, making everyone feel better about themselves (because we know its not our faults and must be someone else's or else its due to some "syndrome") and making it a "win" to overcome 400 lbs instead of avoiding gaining it in the first place.

If all supplements became controlled, that would lead to a lot of drug-seeking patients. Go to a doctor and tell him I need some Vit C, Vit D, Fish Oil, CoQ10, Zinc, and Magnesium. And some creatine.
    Cumming day and night.

Do we really need any more reason than this to just get off ye olde ass, step away from the donut and go walk around the block?

Obesity rates are higher in America where people have less money. We have subsidized corn to the point where people can eat a bunch of junk (fast food and potato chips) for way cheaper than they can purchase lean meats and fresh veggies.

That is where the problem is. Natural things are better than those supplements.

That's related to education and being lazy, not food choices. I know, I live there. You can plan and cook perfectly healthy meals for less than these people are spending at McDonald's every day. You're just hating on fast/junk food because its cliche. You know whats wrong with fast/junk food? Everyone uses it as an excuse. The only excuse you have for eating fast food is not being physically able to make your own food. Even then there are reasonable alternatives, i.e. Schwan's, that are comparable in general to fast food prices. Hell buy some peanut butter or lunch meat and make a sandwich if you don't want to cook.

Fast/junk food doesn't have a responsibility to anyone to produce cleaner, less caloric food. We have that responsibility as a society. If we don't want it, we'll stop buying it and they will change.

But back to the topic at hand. Whats considered a supplement? Hell they add protein to granola now. Does that make granola a supplement?

You can't patent those kinds of things. Formulations of said things maybe but not the naturally occurring compounds themselves (That only happens with it comes to genetics so far). But whats better? A supplement industry that can put whatever it wants into a product and sell it at whatever ratio of ingredients they chose? Or one that has to list all material used and their amounts on the label? I prefer the later. That's why I make my own.
