Doctor Avoids Charges in Oklahoma Bodybuilding Steroid Investigation

Doctor Avoids Charges in Oklahoma Bodybuilding Steroid Investigation
    By Millard Baker

Tulsa County physician Dr. Gary Lee reached an agreement with the local district attorney to avoid prosecution over allegations that he prescribed anabolic steroids to competitive bodybuilders “for the purpose of building muscle bulk and muscle enhancement.” Lee pleaded “not guilty” to the charges in February 2010. Under the terms of the agreement, Dr. Lee maintains his not guilty plea but agrees to a two-year supervision period by the district attorney’s office after which the felony charges will be dismissed.

Dr. Gary Lee was arrested as part of a far-reaching Oklahoma steroid investigation that specifically targeted IFBB and NPC bodybuilders and the network of individuals tied to the sport of competitive bodybuilding several years ago. Some bodybuilders had prescriptions for the steroids found during police raids.

Tulsa Police were not deterred by physician-prescribed anabolic steroids. When the bodybuilders ended up having prescriptions for the pharmaceutical steroids, police decided to pursue the doctor(s) who prescribed them.

At least three competitive bodybuilders obtained steroid prescriptions from visits with the Tulsa-area physician. Lee, a family and sports medicine physician at Gilcrease Medical Center, prescribed stanozolol (Winstrol) and nandrolone (Deca Durabolin) for the “off-label” purpose of treating and assisting recovery from injuries to three bodybuilders.

Tulsa County Assistant District Attorney Tony Evans filed felony anabolic steroid distribution charges against Dr. Lee at the time. Oklahoma authorities were assisted by the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) and other federal law enforcement agencies during the course of the investigation. All charges against Dr. Lee will be dropped after the successful completion of the two-year supervisory period.
