Arnold Schwarzenegger and how to succeed in life unnaturally

    By Jim Evans

Accusations by several women against California Governor Arnold Scwarzenegger for sexual harassment during his inaugeral campaign in 2003 must have been true for the most part or he would not have apologized for having “behaved badly.” And there may be still other women who were victimized over the years who did come forward. But, while I empathize with these women and understand their humiliation, I also understand how the Governator might have been influenced over the years to wrongly behave this way.

I first met Arnold in 1970 at the World Weightlifting Championships and Mr. World Bodybuilding Championships at Mershon Auditorium in Columbus, Ohio. Our company was one of the main sponsors of the event and provided the trophies for the physique competition won by Arnold over a field of some of the greatest bodybuilders ever to appear on stage at one time. He was a young man then – just 24 – and his English was still unpolished and heavily accented, but even then he had a charisma that was undeniable. Especially to women. They swarmed around him like bees around honey. They couldn’t wait to touch him and “feel his muscles.” They rolled their eyes, and “oohed” and “ahhed” with occasional squeals of delight when he flexed his biceps or “winked” his pectorals. Elvis who? These were groupies of a different kind – but just as fanatical – fawning over his “body beautiful.”

A few years later, in 1974, I sat with Arnold on the first leg of a plane ride from Columbus to Los Angles via Minneapolis while he was studying the script for one of his early movies, “Stay Hungry,” with Sally Field. He was relatively unconspicuous in his loose-fitting clothes sitting in a window seat engrossed in the script, so few people on the plane noticed him. But he was not unnoticed by the flight attendants (we called them stewardesses then). Whenever they walked by, they took extra pains to look twice at the tanned, athletic-looking young man with the engaging smile. He had, by now, already achieved the pinnacle of bodybuilding with the Mr. Olympia title, and he had the aura and demeanor of a champion. He was then – as he is now – supremely confident and charming, and they sensed that he was “somebody” and were seduced by his celebrity.

Later that same year I had dinner with him at Neptune’s West Restaurant in Los Angeles together with singer Jimmy Rogers and Irwin Paris (Jack LaLanne’s manager at the time). I particularly remember this meeting because, from the time Arnold joined us at the table, it seemed like every woman who entered the restaurant made a beeline toward him. They batted their eyes, swiveled their hips, cooed sweet nothings in his ear, and rubbed their hands over his biceps. A seemingly endless parade of women made their way to our table to meet the “Austrian Oak.” They were clearly looking for more than just an autograph.

The four of us conversed lightly and ordered our beverages while the procession of female admirers continued. Midway through our salads, Arnold put down his fork and excused himself to walk away with a buxom blonde. I never saw him again in person after that day.

Such female adoration and aggressiveness does not justify Arnold’s boorish behavior toward women in general, but it does show, perhaps, how we place male athletes, movie stars, celebrities, and politicians on pedestals, and how they might sometimes assume – wrongly, of course – that every woman secretly wants to go to bed with them and that any kind of sexual innuendo is acceptable behavior even when considered only “playful.” I don’t know why these women waited so long to make their accusations public – only they can answer that – but Arnold was right to apologize even if it might have been too late.

My personal beef with Arnold is not his harassment of women, which is bad enough, but, rather, the adverse effect that he has had on the youth of Calfornia – indeed, the youth of America – by being elected governor in the first place. Why? Because Arnold probably would not have been elected governor if he had not used anabolic steroids (and, while I am on the subject, Jesse Ventura would probably not have been elected governor of Minnesota if he had not used steroids either). Ridiculous, you say?

Let’s be honest. Without the use of steroids, Arnold probably would not have achieved his remarkable physique; he probably would not have earned bodybuilding fame by winning the Mr. Olympia title seven times; he probably would not have been featured in the documentary film “Pumping Iron” which launched his movie career; and he probably would never have had occasion to meet Maria Shriver in his wildest dreams. He probably would not have been appointed to head the President’s Council on Physical Fitness, and he probably would not have been elected governor. He probably would not have had to face so many public accusations of sexual harassment either because his celebrity status would have been “terminated” even before it began.

Fans will say in Arnold’s defense that “everyone” was using steroids in those days and, after all, they weren’t considered illegal until several years later. In fact, “everyone” was NOT using steroids in those day, and steroids were illegal even then unless prescribed by a physician - which begs the question of what medical condition Arnold and his friends were afflicted with at the time to justify their continuing “prescriptions” for bodybuilding. It must have been a serious (and highly contagious) aliment to have lasted for so many years.

Athletes have always sought a competitive edge to win, and Arnold was no different from many other athletes who turned to performance enhancing drugs to achieve victory. He had to know that it was morally wrong, but his desire to win was apparently stronger than his ethical values, and the end justified the means. Has he continued to use steroids over the years to prepare for his occasional movie roles? I don’t know. But my concern, now that he has been twice elected and served as California governor, is that every youngster in America will assume that it is acceptable to use steroids to look like Arnold and to be like Arnold. And very athlete in America will assume that winning is everything even if it means cheating. Why not? It has worked for Arnold.

Perhaps our country is becoming conditioned to the new principle that winning is more important than how we play the game and that the end always justifies the means.

    I hope not.

Definitely disagree with this author's opinion. Arnold's main overriding characteristic is not some lack of morality, but instead a seemingly unceasing drive and desire. The man has personal motivation that must surpass 99% of the population. Always heard that AAS were indeed legal back in the day, however I may have that wrong. Regardless, Arnold's drive to succeed is what saw him rise to the top in bodybuilding, acting (for box office anyway), and politics.

Steroids were illegal to posess without a prescription in Arnold's day, but were not classified as controlled substances until the 1980's. I think Arnold's behavior betraying his wife and his family is reprehensible, but I think the argument above is specious at best. Connecting morality with the use of Anabolics is not logical, and the fact is that steroids were prevalent in all major sports during this time, not just bodybuilding. I agree that Arnold's dedication and drive is what drove him to succeed. It's almost as if he willed it to happen through an overwhelming desire for fame and fortune, and everything that goes with it.

I understand where the author is coming from, and I agree (in some sense) and at the same time I disagree.

Yes, the steroids gave him that extra edge that gave him those titles, which lead to movies which MAY or MAY NOT have lead to him being governor.

However I feel Arnold's desire to reach the top was what made him have so much success. If steroids are what brought him to the top (solely) then a large % of people on this forum would be movie stars, presidents, governors, people with high positions, and by looking at most people in these positions it's obvious they don't use steroids or a least not on any level most people in the anabolic section use.

DISCLAIMER:[B] I do not condone the use of anabolic steroids, all information about Anabolic Steroids is for educational and entertainment purposes only.

some guys here do more steroids than Arnold ever thought of doing... why aren't they winning titles? Arnold didn't need steroids, his personality was his steroid. his drive, discipline, and unfuckinbelievable genetics got him there. if he did that many steroids he'd have had ronnie colemnan's gut right?

i think that guy is just still pissed Arnold left with the blonde in the middle of their lunch.

Ah, when the masses discover their idol's feet of clay.

    I agree with Little Wing.

I haven't read anything about Arnold, and I don't read mags, or watch tv. So, if I'm missing some woman that he raped, or sexually harrassed, forgive me. But the way the author describes these women in the first paragraph as 'victims' seems far fetched when compared later in the article when he describes the average female response to the man, FIRST HAND.

I get it. He sired a kid outside of marriage. Not cool. Not all that shocking, or rare - certainly not a great idea. Um, HOW IS THIS RELATED TO STEROID USE? And what the hell is up with the comment about all the untold women who haven't come forward? Women get hit on by creeps all the time - if she isn't interested, MOVE on. It isn't victimization - the author is a drama queen!

This author possesses no train of thought, or logic.

Steroids. Yeesh. It isn't like the man was the ONLY one doing 'em, therefore, he dominated everything. I'm pretty sure others, if not ALL who were competing, had access. The guy was an unstoppable force of nature. He achieved all that he wanted to, and he was ruthless in his efforts to do so. So he won. Surprised?

I really hate how our culture idolizes public figures, and then, because it's news, publishes the flaws to ad infinitum/ad neauseum. So what if we suddenly realize someone wasn't balanced, didn't have a great home life, or marriage, or what have you. Is it really so shocking?

A person can only be great at a certain number of things. Some choose fame, fortune, and success over marriage, family, and relationships. I'd say the average Joe/Mary sucks at both......but I've been known to be cynical.

Good points, however the article is from one year ago -- long before Arnie's recent drama unfolded.

You're right on noting Arnold's ruthless drive for success. He's the Alpha's Alpha.

Bill Grant, IFBB competitor and Mr. World commented in one interview just how p1ssed Arnold got when grant beat him by one rep in a certain exercise. lulz

Yeah, I don't get out much, as I mentioned....lol And evidently I don't notice dates either. Actually, I initially thought YOU wrote the article and for a moment the earth's gravitational pull shifted, until I went back up and noticed who the author was (but NOT, apparently, the date) It was quite disorienting, but I am better now.

So, these other women whom he apologized for......fact or fiction? Since I obviously don't know what the hell I'm talking about.
