Exclamation Testosterone Drop Helps Men Do Daddy-Duty

    THE GIST
    • The male hormone fell by 34 percent after men became fathers.
    • Testosterone levels in more than 600 men showed marked declines in salivary testosterone.
    • Research in some primates has shown that when a father sniffs the scent of his own babies, but not strange babies, his testosterone drops within minutes.

Men experience a drop in testosterone after the birth of their children, a phenomenon that may help them meet the challenges of caring for their offspring, said a study released on Monday.
    NEWS: Does a Parent’s Gender Impact A Child’s Success
Testosterone is a hormone that fuels male sexuality, aggression and physical robustness, and is typically highest in young, single men with no children, said the research in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
With less testosterone coursing through their veins, men are more likely to adopt fatherly roles and help nurture their children, a particular need among humans who have much longer dependent childhoods than other mammals.

"Raising human offspring is such an effort that it is cooperative by necessity, and our study shows that human fathers are biologically wired to help with the job," said co-author Christopher Kuzawa of Northwestern University in Illinois.
The research was based on 624 men, age 21-26, in the Philippines who were tracked for nearly five years -- a period in which some of them entered stable relationships and became new fathers.
Of those who started the study single and became fathers by the end of it, the men with the highest initial testosterone levels were more likely to have become dads.
This distinction was important because previous studies had not been able to establish whether a testosterone dip observed in newly married men was a trait that made men more likely to marry, or if it resulted from the act of partnering.
"The men who started with high testosterone were more likely to become fathers, but once they did, their testosterone went down substantially," said co-author Lee Gettler, a doctoral candidate in anthropology at Northwestern.

"Our findings suggest that this is especially true for fathers who become the most involved with child care."
Men who became fathers during the study showed a median 26 to 34 percent drop in testosterone levels, which was significant compared the normal age-related decrease seen in single men who were not fathers (12-14 percent).
The steepest declines were seen in fathers of newborns, one month old or younger.
"Fatherhood and the demands of having a newborn baby require many emotional, psychological and physical adjustments," Gettler said. "Our study indicates that a man's biology can change substantially to help meet those demands."

Very interesting read! Does the same rule apply for those on test?

I think if we look at it in evolutionary point of view, we all are here for 1 reason which is to reproduce and continue our genes, so having a kid means we were successful in our journey. so no need for High levels of test

I see the possibility that high stress of being a new father with another mouth to feed and more bills to pay, and lack of sleep could effect natural test levels. My question is, was this factored into the study?

I am not speaking from experience, I have observed many friends in this situation from an outside looking in perspective.

It's about your natural production, so external test probably won't have anything to do with it.

Here's a link to the abstract (link to full text is on the right). Longitudinal evidence that fatherhood decreases testosterone in human males
They didn't test explanations, they only measured a decrease. They give one possible explanation though. IMO, it's probably a combination of factors, from the stress and lack of sleep to the fact that spending time with your baby will encourage you to be less aggressive and more understanding to probably some kind of inbuilt switch or genetic trigger.

I believe it. I've wondered about this for years. I think my natural test went to crap after my first kid.

I totally believe it, I mean when u have kids, the stress levels go up and sleep goes down, work hours probably go up also, sex might also go down (I've read that sex helps keep natural test levels up)

Makes sense that kids ruin test levels hahahaha
