Water With Meals.

Do you drink water with meals?

If so, how much?

and why?

If not, why don't you?

Just askin'. Not something you hear a lot about in discussion.

Just drink the water.....you don't have to analyze the hell out of this one.....just KISS it.

Jag, it's not worth complicating, unless you are a pro-bodybuilder on a cut.

Anyway just my two cents, good luck.

Don't get me wrong. I'm no newby asking advice. I'm just looking at what different people do regarding a topic that isn't discussed much which is "water with meals" not to be confused with the importance of water in general!!

Do you have any particular notions on why or why not you should or shouldn't drink water with your meals?

I always thought that drinking at least 8-16 oz of water after your meals was supposed to aide in digestion

Actually drinking before a meal, I just read recently, is good for digestion and drinking during isn't the best. Something about the fluid getting in the way of your body's natural acids, etc. doing their job of breaking down the food.

But I still sip while I eat!

This was pretty much the idea of the thread. Some alleged experts say

"Drink water before meals because....."

others say "Drink water with meals because....."

and even others say "Only drink water between meals, never during, because....."

Personally i drink 2 full glasses after my meal. One to wash down a few supps and one to decrease my craving for some sort of dessert.

I heard something different. Drink water 30 mins after having food 'coz it creates problems for digestive enzymes to do the intial work lol! (if u have water soon after a meal)

I drink water with meals because when you eat, you get thirsty, when you get thirsty, you drink. (Not always water but more often than not).

I have heard people say not to drink water with meals to prevent bloating, but I think that's a load of bull. I can't imagine eating as much protein as I do without some water to help get it all down. I have noticed that when I drink lots of water with meals (as well as throughout the day), my gains are better, and my muscles stay fuller. It really is a no brainer.

I actually consume tons of water for 2-3 meals of the day. When I eat tuna, I usually eat 4-5 cans at once, with nothing on them. I just mash up the tuna even more, take huge bites, and wash it down with a big swig of water. I probably end up drinking close to a half gallon within 10 minutes sometimes (If I'm also thirsty beforehand.) I leave feeling a little bloated, but I pee a few minutes later, and I'm fine.

I personally try to drink water after meals because in the middle of the meal or 20 mins prior it kinda fills me up. That's the only reason. I then fill whatever space is left after the meal with water. This isn't always the case, depends on the dryness of the food. I drink about half a litre of water per cracker.

I would have thought water aids digestion because it helps hydrolise the food and makes it easier for the stomach to mechanically break down the food, plus with the food floating in the expanded stomach rather than being compressed provides more surface area for enzymes to break down the food.

I'm no expert though, I don't think it really matters as long as your appetite is not hindered.

I'm a fan of not downing copious amounts of liquids with a meal. Probably from my more yogic days. I agree it could have affect on diluting the gastric acids and enzymes. And I really thought about it when one report I read said, how many other animals do you see eat and drink and eat and drink. I seldom drink alot but I always have something with my meals, and I dam sure feel better when I don't drink alot.

4-5 cans of Tuna in one sitting? Why?

I can see where you wouldn't want to down a gallon while eating, but the idea that drinking water is going to harm your digestion is a bit ridiculous.

It's usually 4. That's 100 grams of protein. I'm trying to get 2+ grams of protein per pound of bodyweight, and for me that is 500+ grams. I work in a kitchen, am usually pressed for time, and tend to be able to get about 5 meals in per day. Tuna is an extremely easy way to get that protein in, I mean it's basically already chewed

Water and digestion

Its not going to harm digestion but it is going to weaken the strength of your gastric juices and enzymes from working as efficiently as they could without having water with a meal.

Its common sense....if you can minimise water consumption around meal times and increase it away from meal times yoiur body will thank you fir it in the long term.......however dont get dehydrated over it, just drink.

Yea, but how many animals eat where there is water readily available?

This would also include your ancestors, unless you think the world was made 6000 years ago. And you can watch a pet.

Yea but they don't have glasses with them to drink. As in the water isn't just next to them.

Can you watch your ancestors?

My gerbils drink when they are dehydrated and I have seen them drink shortly after eating. I'm not calling you out or anything I'm just pondering.

I think drinking is also affected by the type of food eaten. I mean if you're eating a soup or something with a rich stew you are less likely to drink than with something like a dry piece of chicken breast. Might be to do with a low amount of saliva available and using the water as a lubricant.

IMO I think that drinking excessive (which is subjective anyways) amounts of water while eating a meal just dilutes stomach acids so it might take longer to digest that meal

Oh, if you are trying to prevent overeating, then you should also drink water BEFORE a meal. It can make you more full.

I don't mind overeating a SOMETIMES as long as i can stick to the healthy stuff that i normally eat.

It's once i've finished my meal and the cravings for something sweet and sugary start that i find the water AFTER my meal helps. This is usually at night, the worst time to get cravings!!!

I only sip if I have to during a meal. I wait atleast 10 mins after a meal to drink. I have found that this really helps me get the whole meal down without feeling full. I seem to be digesting a little better since I have reduced liquid intake at a meal.

I typically drink 4-8 oz of water just before a meal and none during, though I do drink wine during a meal as it compliments it.

Interesting topic.
