Yams/Sweet Potatoes
I have been meaning to start including the above mentioned carbs in my diet for the longest time, I keep hearing they are great foods. My primary carb sources lately have been oatmeal, wheat pasta, fiber one bread, fruits, veggies and whatever trace amounts are in MRP/protein powder. I was just wondering for those of you that eat sweet potatoes and/or yams regularly how you like to prepare them? I am pretty big on simplicity too, as long as the taste is not completely awful. I can remember back in high school, I used to bake a potato the previous night and eat it cold the next day like an apple. Not exactly a tasty treat. Guess we didn't have a microwave there.

My wife bakes them, slits it down the middle, sprays some fat free I can't believe it's not butter spray all over it and some salt and pepper. I just pick it up and eat it skin and all and it's delicious. If you aren't watching your sugar, I can even get my kids to eat them with some brown sugar.

I wrap 'em in foil and bake 'em until soft. Split it open, salt it, and butter if you can afford the calories.

They're also wonderful with salt and - wait for it - peach jam. I do this often for carbubs, or for post workout.

Strawberry's nice too. Don't forget the salt though - it brings out the sweetness.

Aren't they amazing? Ever since I've (mostly) stopped eating grain, I've had to look for substitutes for carbups. Jammy sweet potatoes have done much to ease the transition.

I like to add peanut butter or almond butter to them with a little cinnamon and brown sugar. You could sub splenda for the sugar, and it would still taste great.

Oh man.
Wash them, poke some holes in them. Take a small amount of olive oil (or even do what I do and use olive oil cooking spray) and evenly cover the the surface of the potato. Wrap it in tin foil and put it in the toaster on around 350deg for 1-1.5 hours. The outside will be burnt slightly but the inside is just delicious! |
