it is essential to consume whey after a weight training session. whole foods just take to long to digest before the nutrients enter the bloodstream.
whey takes about 20 minutes where as chicken/tuna/beef is close to 90 minutes or more...
i'm usually having a protein shake as my first meal after the gym. (with fat source).
is it really a big deal to get a whey shake in right after the gym or would a regular meal be fine too? if one day i just really don't want the shake (like......ummmm.....last night) is it fine to eat a meal with same amount of protein coming from chicken/tuna/beef etc. instead of the whey?
i know the whey is quickly absorbed - but is it really THAT big a deal to have a shake after every lifting session as long as you get food in?
thanks!

I train differently than most, my beef is with gravity the weights on the bar are just the medium...Thanks to Wall Street your slice of the American Pie has been reduced to a crumb.
From a recovery standpoint, there is definitely a greater benefit for having a protein drink (but why would you add fat, if anything carbs to decrease cortisol and increase protein synthesis).
Realistically though, in the whole scheme of things I doubt it matters and will probably make an insignificant difference in your overall results. If you compete, yes, its probably important, if not I wouldn't sweat it. After all, protein synthesis after lifting is elevated for up to 36 hours after your workout, so its important to get plenty of protein in this time frame. Some lean protein w/ carbs if you are having any would probably be adaquete.
LMAO- NIKEGURL we are SO on the same page!
I had asked DPW8 this. I was having a shake preworkout(because I found I don't have time to make and eat dinner after work) and then I had one after the gym for convience. I started to still be hungry after my postworkout shake, so I asked DPW8 if "real food" would be ok or better.
DP told me to go for the "real food" !![]()
DP has spoken! thanks Leslie! I'm not abandoning the shake idea but every now and then I just don't want the damn thing after the gym. I'm usually still hungry after the shake and I work out late so that meal is usually my last meal of the day.
On the one hand you want the quick absorption after training BUT at the same time you want slower release proteins for the last meal of the day. I'm going for "real food" at least some of the time.

One thing, if you are willing a fast acting protein such as a whey isolate before lifting would probably provide better protein synthesis than post-workout protein, at least according to 1 study that looked at this. The idea is to get the protein to hit the bloodstream at or near the end of the workout, rather than post-workout where it would take another hour or so to get there. So pre-workout protein drink, followed by food after your workout to provide a steady flow of aminos would work well.
makes sense! feels better to me that way too. thanks for the good info.

Ditto!
Aye Aye to what Pete said.
At the NSCA conference in Vegas they discussed this study which supported the notion that preworkout protein will be used more efficiently than the same protein postworkout. I believe what they used was whey isolate, but cannot remember.
Man on a mission!
thanks Duncan! (where have you been?)
this works well for me since my post workout meal is often my last meal. i'll go with whey preworkout and then real food postworkout. that way i have a slower release protein for the overnight.

is the post workout meal different when bulking? im bulking and after my workout i eat 50 g whey along with flax and brown rice
Not really, no. It prolly doesn't matter that much.
But you could exchange the brown rice for some sort of dextrose or maltodextrin (or a combination of both, but dro the flax).
