Eliminating whey from my daily diet.

I'll probably get bashed for this, But whenever I eliminate protein shakes out of my training regiment, I lean down and still keep newly formed muscle. My only protein source comes from food. I used to drink 1 maybe 2 shakes a day consisting of two sccops whey powder, 2 oz skim milk, water, and ice blended up. This was fine for my taste, but I feel it was adding unnecesarry weight gain in the abdomen. Can anyone else relate to this????

then i would guess you get enough protein in your reg food, and you are adding calories with the shakes

You leaned down because you decreased your caloric intake and ultimately went below maintenance. Whether the protein shakes are the sole reason for losing or gaining the fact is indeterminable unless that is the only variable that you manipulated. Whatever explains the bodyfat changes, the fact remains that you directly decreased your caloric intake by eliminating a calorie source -- protein shakes.

You were probably taking in sufficient protein from solely your food sources. How many grams of protein does that work out to, by the way?

One can potentially dig deeper and suggest other hypotheses. For example, consuming a protein shakes instead of a solid meal may make one hungrier when the following meal comes up causing one to overeat during the next meal.

Protein shakes consumed pre-meal tend to promote satiety, but if you're knocking back a shake instead of a meal, I suppose that's possible. Regardless, to the OP, you ate more calories when you had those shakes - and discovered a very cool trick: when you consume more calories than you require, you gain weight.

    I know, right?

I don't use whey anymore unless I get a RTD. That's not to say I'll never buy any again.

Real food is better than whey protein and it burns more calories to digest it. A protein shake has no metabolic value as it is pre-digested.

However whey is so convenient, I'm with the Capt'n on this ... sorry Marquis du Perfert. Whey protein and oats have become my pre workout meal as it doesn't bloat me at all.
