If you're dieting, you're probably glycogen-depleted. If you're at all dehydrated as well, you'll register as a fatass on those things - they measure total body water as a proxy for muscle tissue. Drop glycogen, you've dropped water. So it thinks you're skinny-fat.![]()

I'm a great believer in luck and I find that the harder I work, the more I have of it.
Buit is right. Some of those scales measure the bf in strange ways. I have a Tanita scale and I am at the point I just ignore the fat reading because it doesnt seem right at all. I can still see most of my abs and I am clearly gaining muscle but the fat reading is over 21%. Sometimes even higher than that. I am bulking so I dont let the fat % bother me too much but it sure is strange at times. I bet these Tanita scales would drive people insane.
Goal: 190lbs - Currently: 190 lbs - 22.0% bf
I used to be 141 lbs then put on 30lb in 3 months thanks to the helpful forum members.Now trying to maintain 190lbs but lower bodyfat.


I usually use old fashioned ice block tongs and a tape measure.

Of course, there's always the "public visual assessment" approach......just take your shirt off in public and tally up how many people yell, "Oh my God! You're Obese!"
