    Carb Up

AHHHH!!! all my fellow personal trainers are carbing up on junk and looking better....frustrating!!!!!
Is there a alternative to the carb-up of oats/banana/sweet potatoe...don't want to eat junk like them..but if I carb up on Sundays once a week as having C50-80...quite active...
can I eat sushi or thai food/ a proper meal or a all-natural treat instead of oats and stuff.

For the longest time I kept my total carbs...including fibre at about 100grams and always carbed up on Sunday. Man did I love Sundays. I never ate just oats, bananas, and sweet potato to carb up.....nor did I veg on junk. In my opinion...and as I said it is only my opinion...others are sure to disagree....but the total calories and carbs are more important than the source...on your carb-up days that is. It is important to eat a variety of foods so I say go ahead and eat some different carbs on Sunday.

Of course this would change if you were trying to get extremely ripped for a competition or something.

Good luck and enjoy...but try to avoid the junk foods.

So what do you carb up on, do you keep the calories on carb-ups the same by reducing P/F, how much extra carbs do you eat...FF, what about having normal food...do you dine out...or stick to the same day by day...I don't like junk food...but do like to eat out with friends on weekends...like lattes, sushi...stuff like that..what about you??
is it a must to carb up on the 6th /last meal??

As I said others will disagree but when I do the low carb thing I also like to have a live too

For me that usually means eating carbs whenever I want during that day

I love eating out...not junk but nice, high quality food

I never worried about carbing up only on the last meal of the day unless I was n a very, very specific pre-competition diet or something. I say enjoy your sushi, lattes, etc. but limit it to one day a week and then get strict again on Monday. As I said...just my personal thoughts.

Consider how enjoyable life is if you can't do anything enjoyable since your so concerned about food...I've been there before...and now I'm not...I much prefer it this way.

    Gee...my posts are soooo long

Thanks FF, I agree!! its hard for me to be so concerned about what/when/how much to eat, I am motivated and disciplined...but spontaneous also and love trying different things including good food...I was never into junk and never will be...so its one day a week for you...how many meals do you have...do you keep the calories the same...I am getting into this lifestyle of eating now..always eat healthy but not that strict...although love to train hard and haven't missed a day of gym since 2 years rain/snow... I ask tooo many questions huh!!lol
do you have a formula to how many carbs on that day or you go with the flow???

No worries about the questions I have to agree about junk food....never been my thing.

When I am following a diet like you are speaking of I just go with the flow on my cheat day....I don't count calories....just eat whatever and whenever.....like if I'm shopping and I'm hungry I'll grab some chinese or a sub...if I'm out for the night....maybe some pasta or something....I find doing this helps to stay on the plan instead of going crazy thinking of food.

Here's the deal with carb-ups. A carb up food needs to be(assuming your protein needs are taken care of):

    -Low in fat.
-Should not contain High Fructose Corn Syrup.
-Preferrably should not contain Sugar (sucrose).
    -High in Carbs

Those restrictions leave you with less room than you'd think. And you are forced to start reading the ingredients labels, not just the nutritional facts on food packages. I pig out on crap foods during my carb-ups. Cocoa Pebbles, with skim milk. Nerds (dunno if you have those over in Canuck land), smarties, sweet tarts (the non-chocolate one, rockets or whatever they're called).

Sushi is great, but watch out for the roles with stuff like avocado, cream cheese in it, because you need to limit your fat intake.

For a one day re-feed, you don't really have to count cals, just be sure to follow those guidelines, if you are extending it towards another day, counting cals becomes more important because fat gain is a very real possibility.

EDIT: BTW, fat-free pop tarts, fat free apple danish gets

I live in Brooklyn and i'm russian, i don't know if this stereotype exists nationally/internationally, but over here russians are known for eating tons of sushi. its pretty much a weekly thing for me, all you can eat sushi for 15 bucks is a great deal, throw in a little sake and sapporo (japanese beer) and you got a great time!

My name is Yan (just in case anyone is wondering the 'an' is not pronounced like 'dan' but its pronounced like 'on'), Yanick is a nickname of sorts, kindda like Rob is to Robert, except in we make the name longer not shorter (what're you gonna say? Ya?). It's actually a polish name, and i keep getting hints that my name in english is jack or jake, but i'm not sure, everyone just calls me Yan, Yanick (the 'ick' is pronounced 'eek') or Yanak (the 'ak' is pronounced like 'jack' and the 'an' is pronounced like 'dan' in this form).

I've been to Canada once about 2 years ago, we took a tour of Toronto, Quebec, some other places i'm not too sure, it wasn't very enjoyable for me.

I know few cool russian people here, I was in New York last year, passed by Brooklyn...too bad you didn;t like Toronto, sometimes I like it and sometimes I feel I should leave and explore a new place...I love japanese and asian food, so much taste to it...I tried to learn how to make sushi, it looked awful when I made it, tons of resturants here, I gave up sushi for a while, due to this insane perfection of having a all-natural, low carb diet...but have discovered it doesn't work for me, and in the longer run makes me obess about food which I don't want to do...having a healthy body as well as mind is important now to me...
Yanick is a nice name...do you speak Russian?

I didn't have a good time, mostly due to being there with my mom, who drove me nuts the whole time. The cities that i visited where quite nice actually, much cleaner than NY.

I agree about the healthy mind, and you truly do need to have a life, bodybuilding isn't everything.

And yes, i'm a full blown Russian, i speak/read/write Russian, and drink Vodka straight

QueenofSquats....what you said about having a healthy mind and body makes sooo much sense...obsessing over minimal carbs all the time doesn't make for much of an enjoyable life...nor is it healthy...in my opinion...alhough others will not agree I am sure.

Good luck with your new nutritional plan...in my ind all is OK in moderation

I agree Canada is very clean, although New York is quite filty it has an amazing buzz, which Toronto lacks, I guess! every city has its great/and not that great things...how long have you been leaving in NY, yeah!!! it took me a while in my life to figure out its not black or white, there are shades of purple too..lol..and hey!! nothing and noone can be perfect, we can do, try and be the best we can...

About the diary, I''ve already gotten a bit off traack...but to some extent intentionally....I took a good look at myself and I feel I probably don't need to worry about hardening up before I begin my competition diet. Based on where I feel I am I should have plenty of time to cut up starting on January 1. The BB Comp is April 7th...so I should have a solid 15 weeks or so to get ready.

So I think I'm just trying to maintain or maybe add a little LBM b/w now and Jan.1. I'm also doing this cause I think that if I concentrate on my diet too much now I will lack the necessary focus and discipline to last another 15 weeks over the winter.

I'm going to keep making entries in my diary though...it just won't be centered aroun....well....LOW CARBS! Hope you follow it...I'd appreciate any input. THX

BTW......weekend is great...just saw RED DRAGON...wow...great flick...you have to see it in case you haven't already. Also enjoyed a yummy piece of caremel cheesecake last night along with some great chinese

Eat what you want on your carb days unless you are in the last weeks of preparation before a contest. Rice has basically the same effect on blood sugar as sucrose.

My carb ups are very similar to Yanicks except I eat fruity pebbles in place of cocoa pebbles.

    queen of squats,

Yep NY has a great buzz, but i have lived here since i've been 4 years old and it doesn't have the same attraction to me as it would to someone who has never visited. And thats a great point about the purple. i totally agree, and i'm sure that if left to my own devices in Canada, i would definitely have had more fun. i here the night life over there is great, great clubs and all that.

    Dunc,

I'm glad someone else see's my point about carb-ups. One question, what's your opinion of fructose during a carb-up?

Fructose is fine on a carb up. Fructose only becomes a problem when you eat it everyday. I believe DP and w8's whole problem with it is it may cause insulin resistance, which it would not do if you only eat it once or twice a week.

Well i wasn't really speaking about fructose from DPw8's POV, although its a legitimate concern.

The low carber guys have beef with fructose because it is stored in the liver and its harder for them to go into ketosis because of that.

Since i don't give a rat's ass about ketosis, it leads me to my second point.

The leptin guys say that fructose does nothing for leptin.

Leptin is my biggest concern right now, seeing as that is what i am focusing on with my re-feeds.

So from your response and from my research, i'm guessing its not necessary but it won't kill you. Care to opine?
