    Whey protein & milk allergies

    Because I'm finding it hard to eat all the protein I ought to, I've been thinking about starting to buy & use protein supplements (whey is the main one I know of; I need to get a bit more educated ).
    One thing that concerns me is that my body does not really get along milk - it gives me a blocked nose, headache, acne etc... so I avoid all dairy products. Because whey protein comes from milk, will I likely have the same effects if I start using it? Or is it purely the lactose that would cause these side-effects?
    Also, are there non-dairy alternatives to whey?

    I'm not too sure about the whey causing those symptoms, or whether or not its a lactose intolerance, but i know that my Optimum jug says that its "low lactose"

    Also there is egg protein, derived from....you got it, eggs. So you can look into that. There is also casein, but i believe that it is derived from milk also, not sure bout that one.

    Soy Protein "Milk" is being pushed lately. Maybe try that. Lactose and Cholesterol free I believe. Unfortunately, it doesn't appear to have as much protein as Whey, or even Skim Milk.

    The brand I've seen is called So Good, and it comes in a bunch of different flavours.

    www.proteinfactory.com you can mix your own blends, yep casein is milk derived, egg is albumin. Not sure about the whey question, good one for DP/W8 or GP.

    Whey is anywhere from 97-99.5% "Lactose Free" depending on the brand. Only those with severe allergies will have a reaction. Sometimes a little flatulence occurs in those with milder allergies until they are use to whey, butt that blows...err...goes away quickly!

    Well I can't really say that my allergies to milk are serious - I used to drink it daily for years until I recently found out that avoiding dairy made my blocked nose [etc..] noticibly better. And if whey is that low in lactose, then I shouldn't notice much of a big change.

    What I was mainly wondering was: is it simply the lactose that would cause these [mild] allergic reactions, or could the protein (and any other chemicals in milk) also cause them?
