    Newbie asking for help

    Hi, everyone
I'm 36 and probably in the worst shape ever. I'm 5'8" tall, weight 190lb with 23% bodyfat. I'm aiming for 14-12% bodyfat with some muscle on.
I don't have much time to exercise, so I started a 3 days a week whole body circuit routine that lasts 30 min followed by another 30 min. of aerobics, usually running.
My daily caloric requirement is 2500 cal, so I'm on a 1800-2000 cal/day diet. 40% comes from protein (Shakes, chicken, fish, beef, protein bars), 30% fats (olive oil and a few nuts) and 30% carbs (broccoli, coliflower, cabbage, legumes) split in 4 meals.
    A typical day would be
Breakfast: Protein shake with water (40 g proteins) with glutamine and BCAA). 1 handfull raisins.
Lunch: 1 chicken breast, 1/2 Cup green beans, 1 Cup coliflower, 1 Tbsp olive oil
Snack: 1 Universal High Protein Bar
Dinner: 200g low fat beef, 1 cup cabbage, olive oil, 100 g melon

    That would mean 1800 calories, 170 g protein, 120 g carbs.

I'm taking two free meals a week, not very extreme, maybe pizza or a hamburger with fries.

I'm wondering if I'm going the right way. Should I eat more carbs in the morning? Are the calories and proportions right?

Any help is welcome. I promise to include pictures in my next post.

    Thanks

    Hi there

You're on the right path, to be sure. Your diet isn't all that bad - I'd urge you to focus on grams of protein, carb and fat though, and get away from the percentages. The other thing I'd recommend is some heavier lifting instead of the circuit stuff. How about you read the link in my sig on getting started and see if anything in there can help you with your plan?

    Welcome to IM forums.

Thanks for the encouragement. I'll follow Built's training plan. Although I've excercised my whole life, dieting gets confusing since there are so many gurues arround telling you The miracle diet.
I'll get back to you with the improvements!!!!

Hi, Built, thanks for the great articles in your blog. All the information is very straightforward. The carb cycling confuses me a bit, though. Should I eat carbs around my workout time even when trying to reduce body fat? I've read a lot about exercising on an empty stomach to maximice fat loss.
I've been on the program described above for three weeks and have already lost 4 pounds and decreased bodyfat by 2%. It's very exciting, and I'll be fine tuning stuff using your plan next week

patricio, I like to feed my workouts some carbs, but you may prefer not to. Try it both ways, see how you like it. While you're still juicier, you may prefer to either skip it, or to eat the carbs about an hour before you train. Once you're leaner, post-workout carbs may suit you more. That's what happened with me anyway.
