Bulking in an ever changing world.

    Hi everyone,

First off to introduce myself (there is a page for that I know, so apologies)

My friends call me Bren, feel free to call what you like though (within reason!)

I have lifted on and off for around 14 years (26 now) and due to lifes interferences I am actually in worse shape than I was 10 years ago.

My lifts are a fraction of what they were, and I weigh around 50lb less than I did (partially due to a cutting diet at present)

My real question however is this....after bulking up all those years ago on protein shakes full of milk and ice cream, white bread by the loaf and as much weetabix as I could handle (with little fat gains i must say) I read more and more now about milk being evil because of the lactose, wholemeal bread being far too bloating for a bodybuilder, and even things such as weetabix/shredded wheat (which taste pretty bad anyway) being awful foods because of the g.i scale, and brown rice being the only acceptable carbohydrate....

So is there any suitable alternative carbohydrate sources?

To be frank, I have no issue with protein (shakes, tuna, chicken, and any other healthy source- I will gladly eat all day plain), and I know I may get some "shut up and eat your rice and oats comments" which is fair because I appreciate healthy eating is a must, but any suggestions on clean carbohydrates that people use and have used with good effect.

When it comes to boards I have read them all over the years and seen alot of diet plans, but it seems in a few years time every carbohydrate source on the planet will be deemed "EVIL" and unnaceptable.

Sorry for the lenght (next will be shorter) and thanks for any replies

If you are looking for clean carbs, I would say go for sweet potato which is a great vegetable, oatmeal, and brown rice. In the end of the day, don't worry too much about the type of carbs you are consuming as long as they are reasonable and cooked away from oils. As long as you are meeting your daily macros, which includes protein intake, cal, carbs, and fat you will be fine. Welcome back to the game

I find quinoa to be a great carb and protein since it is one of the only complete proteins around. This super food is amazing for energy and also for keeping your digestive tract clean. You are better able to absorb and feel changes from supplements when you eat this grain instead of rice or pasta.
