    Question Different types of protein

Could anyone tell me the different types of protein which are best taken at specific times?

So far I only know there are whey protein and ordinary (not whey) protein. I know that whey protein is quickly absorbed so it is best to take it after a workout session and not before bed. So I thought for other times than post-workout I should simply take ordinary protein. But just recently I was told that there is another type called casein protein, that this is slowly absorbed and thus is best taken before bed. I have never noticed this casein protein sold in any store I have visited so far, don't know whether I was just keep missing it or it is not common or not available where I am.

So what are the different types of protein available out there, and how should I take each of them? Thanks.

    - Josh

Josh...casein is a protein that sort of "clumps" up in the stomach and releases its amino acids into the system gradually...unlike whey which is rapidly absorbed. A protein containing casein before bed is optimal as you will not be eating for 6-8 hours, but will at least have a slow releasing protein in your system to keep you out of catabolism. I also recommend a casein containg MRP to be taken at times that you know you won't be eating again for several hours...of course you can use whole food protein as well, but thats not always so convenient.

There are several excellent casein based proteins out there...Met RX, Muscle Meals, Advanced Protein, Dorian Approved...these are my favorites. I use them regularly!

Seyone, thanks for the link, I'll check it out.

Gopro, thanks for the advise. Unfortunately I've never seen those casein proteins you recommended. I think it's hard to find complete selection of proteins here in Indonesia, I've checked a number of more well known supplement stores but only a few brands are available. Just recently I bought Optimum's Whey and Twinlab's Triple Whey Fuel, also EAS' Precision Protein. I thought Precision was not whey, but after reading the inscription more carefully it turns out that it is whey as well. So now all the protein products I have in stock are whey. So now what should I eat before bed??

You mention whole food protein, I think as an alternative for casein protein. What kind of foods are suitable for before bed? What are the sources for casein protein?

Or, can you suggest casein protein products by Optimum, EAS, Twinlab, Challenger or Universal? I think these are the only brands currently available here, so I would probably be able to ask about their casein products.

    Thanks.

Before bed you can simply eat red meat, or eggs, or cottage cheese. You can also eat chicken or turkey with some natural peanut butter...the fat will slow down digestion.

EAS puts out Myoplex which has casein. Optimum also puts out a meal replacement with casein. I don't think they have just straight casein protein powders, but you can use the MRPs.
