    More stupid diet questions

    Alright, I'd do a poll but I want more in depth answers on how "clean" y'all get.

    As I sit here with my no-antibiotic, grass-fed hamburgers and non-organic cheap frozen veggies and my white merlot, I dumped a bunch of ketchup on my burgers. Then I thought better of it.

    How nuts do y'all get with condiments? Cooking? Do you seek out virgin olive oil or use the spray non-stick crap? Do you cut out mustard and ketchup?

    How spartan do you go with food if you're cutting? Do you get really nuts when you're prepping for a competition?

    I want details.

    You can make no-carb ketchup pretty easy. And I always use evo unless I'm baking something.. then evo spray.

    I think the issue is more with the sodium content. Condiments have a substantial amount, per serving.

    If you are trying to eat clean, then you don't want synthetic preservatives. Sodium doesn't necessarily mean natural salt.

    When in prep, and frankly most of the time I use mustard, balsamic vinegar (maybe w/ a little olive oil in it), when not too close to show time, pickles a little salsa, sea salt, pepper, paprika, chili powder . Pretty spartan.

    As far as sodium - 2 pickles will blow me up if I'm in prep, and I can taste it in my eggs. Generally I never use salt, but in fact for competition you might want to use it as part of your protocol to prepare for water manipulation during peak week.

    I am going very clean on my precontest diet. Sometimes to much!
    I stoped using salt 4 years ago (when I first start getting ready for competition) and don't crave it now.
    Don't like ketchup but can't leave without salsa and mustard!!!

    Not sure what the problem is for you with condiments, Kathy, just count it into your totals and if it fits, you're fine. Outside of something like precontest prep, where the salt can be a problem with regard to bloat, just eat whatever you want.

    in regards to sodium, we highly recommend the use of it pre contest and or off-season. One exception to that is if your had blood pressure issues and your body was unable to excrete the sodium. We like to keep water and sodium the majority of the time as it aids greatly in muscle contraction and helps prevent fatigue. Unless your body has an issue, usually the more sodium you intake, the more your body excretes. Your body will hold onto things that you don't give it. If you restrict water and/or sodium, your body will hold onto them. one of the times that you may see a bloat is only the initial when raising your sodium levels, once they are up, your body should not be retaining any excess fluids
