H20 theory... DP/W8 are gonna hate me...

I was relatively bored for 5days this past week and decided to analyze the most accepted view on water retention... that the less water you drink, the more you retain. I have been going low carb for quite a while (w/ bi/w carbs) and usually carb day shows up as a slight bloat.

So... i cut any actual water from my diet for 5 days. I realize that this is not healthy in any way, but I was bored. I drank diet drinks and only small ammounts of water for this time span and had no adverse effects either retention, change in relative urin color (water expelled), energy issues or otherwise. The fact that I did not have any bloat on carb days was proof enough for me.

While water is necessary and I do not advise ever doing this... water retention is not necessarily due to water intake.

I could be wrong... but my study shows...
    - "If I ever run into Dave Grohl, I'm gonna kick his fuqqin' ass... because he sucks and he wrote this cheese-dick song for Ozzy that I have to fuqqin' play on and I'll never forgive him for that. Foo Fighters is a fuqqin' candy-ass girl band but you've got that mother-fuqqer submitting songs [for the album], and those douchebags from the Offspring, too."
"...Dave Grohl? Fuq Dave Grohl! ...you're getting this guy to write songs for Ozzy? Just because he played drums for fuqqing Sh!tvana?"

Not the best way to prove a point ....and also not why we drink as much water as we do.

In terms of "bloat"....glycogen gets stored with several grams of H2O, whether the body takes it subcutaneously, internally or exongenously from "other fluids" it does not matter, but will have a profound effect on your appearance. Hence we "drop" water for maximum definition in the face of Carbing-up" and restoring glycogen to fill out the muscles.

Of gr8er concern is the metabolic waste from increased protein intake, strenuous training, and your "Rock Star" way of life.

Add in the fact that Soda usually has high levels of Phosphoric Acid...fastest way to deplete calcium there is! I'd say drink more water. (also depletes minerals, consider and Iron-free multi-min at night)

I think many people drink too much water, especially Dr. Pain.

Dr. Pain is only getting 4 litres of water a day...hardly "too much". We lose approximately 2 litres of water a day that needs to be replenished, and if someone works out, they need to replenish what they lose in perspiration from their workout. I think the majority of people are not getting enough water.

I believe glycogen is 3 grams of water per 1 gram glycogen. Oe of the reasons bodybuilders use diuretics before a show

so if he drinks 4 liters per day and only 2 liters need to be replenished, why is the extra 2 liters needed?

w8, kick his ass and pull the stick out of his......oh......just thinking out loud

Yes.....w8 is RIGHT again....I'm averaging 4 but like to get 5-6 L for what seems to be "Optimal" for me nad most others. Almost anyone I find who increases their water to that level.......4-6 L......tells me that they "Look and Feel" better almost immediately at that levl!

    Boss, read for comprehension

She is saying 2 L at just baseline.....more for "Active" people. Actually...a lot depends on weather, exertion, loss of "bodily fluids" etc. I was once at a pool where the coach made water bottles MANDITORY (Cal State San Luis Obispo)...because athletes were dehydrating during W/O's! At 3% loss of BW in H20...your performance is impaired, at 5% you're screwed...start looking for an IV!

w8 can even tell you about how dangerous not drinking ENOUGH is, even at a child's BW .

The two litres lost is just through normal bodily functions (urine, perspiration, breathing, etc) on a typical "rest" day (read: couch potato) ...if some one works out, as do most of us here, then they will lose more water ...in addition to the 2 litres a typical sedentary person would lose.

The level of oxygen in the blood is higher when you're hydrated. The more oxygen your body has available...the more fat you'll burn for energy...w/o it, your body can't use fat for energy as efficiently. Increased oxygen levels also increase energy levels.

Water (being well hydrated) also helps muscle contraction, acts as a cushion for your insides, and also flushes out toxins.

Here....took forever to find this, lol

how much do you weigh, and how much do you work-out?

do you work-out everyday, if so for how long?

other than working out I assume you are indoors all day at your store which is air conditioned, right?

quote from the link....which EVERYONE should read!

    Water Loss
Adults lose nearly 6 pints (12 cups) of water every day. We lose 1/2 cup to 1 cup a day from the soles of our feet. Another 2 to 4 cups is lost from breathing. Perspiration accounts for another 2 cups. Another 3 pints (6 cups) are lost in urine.

Another quote for those not clicking the link:

Aside from aiding in digestion and absorption of food, water regulates body temperature and blood circulation, carries nutrients and oxygen to cells, and removes toxins and other wastes. This "body water" also cushions joints and protects tissues and organs, including the spinal cord, from shock and damage.

it's not that black and white: depends on your body weight, activity level and whether or not you spend your day outside in 100 degree whether or indoors with air condioning.

The fact that I did not have any bloat on carb days was proof enough for me.
...and this is simply because your body drew water from other sources to store that glycogen...it's your basic pre-comp carb up/water drop.

Exactly what I'm saying!!! I've given you the basics of what we lose in water every day....anything more....high activity level, outside in 100 degree weather, etc...and you need more water!

    Another quote from the article:

Dehydration leads to excess body fat, poor muscle tone & size, decreased digestive efficiency & organ function, increased toxicity, joint & muscle soreness, & water retention. Water works to keep muscles and skin toned.

The more water you drink (to a reasonable healthy point) the "harder" you look...and feel!

I use to weigh 155-163 and W/O 25-28 hours per week. (Triathlon and Ultra distance running). I could get by on about 4 litters a day...except for "Long Days" which included 20 plus miles running with 80 plus miles biking.....or either 25-30 miles running or 100-110 miles biking. Those runs or rides in summer, required and extra 4-6 22oz bottles of Electrolyte replacement...and I'd STILL lose 4-8 extra pounds and have to rehydrate the rest of the day!

Now, at 222-3...I workout only 6-7.5 hours a week...........and while I could drink 2-3 L a day....Consuming 320-360 grams of Protein a day....I would NEVER consider it... weather and indoor climate aside. On my 2-2.5 L.......FAILURE to DRINK ENOUGH days.......I dehydrate, and seem more lethargic....night time is particularly bad........urination suffers, and becomes concentrated, and as w8 points out.......you can even feel it in your joints.

    WATER RU:LES!

    Hee...heee...hee

I just posted this to see how bad you guys would rant
seriously though, I knew the risks but just wanted to prove a point, given that the water in<water out theory is quoted too damn much. I've done anywhere b/w 4L-14L/day and there's not really any noticeable difference over time... other than time lost in the pisser

Actually I really did read the whole thread AND the attachments! I do agree just from my experience the drinking more water has done more for me since I started drinking more. I was lucky to drink, maybe 24 oz a day! Now if I don't drink like a gal, I don't feel right. I'm thursty all the time, don't seem to have the necessary energy and I eat more junk food! I'll probably get trashed for the last part, but I do! The water helps curve my hunger, when I want junk food!
