There's a lot out there. I just did a Google search for 'coconut oil thyroid'.
I have to go and can't research from this puter very easily!
The question is:
Can someone find out if there is a connection/benefit between using Coconut Oil (an Omega 7, high in MCT's)...and thyroid function....especially any benefits for Hypothyroidism?
Many Thanks

Ton of quotable stuff......short version
Thyroid-stimulating, anti-aging effects of Coconut Oil
Many researchers have reported that coconut oil lowers cholesterol (Blackburn et al 1988, Ahrens and colleagues, 1957). In 1981, Prior et al. showed that islanders with a diet high in coconut oil showed no harmful health effects. When these groups migrated to New Zealand and lowered their daily coconut oil intake, their total cholesterol and especially their LDL cholesterol - the so-called evil one - increased. The cholesterol-lowering properties of coconut oil are a direct result of its ability to stimulate thyroid function. In the presence of adequate thyroid hormone, cholesterol (specifically LDL-cholesterol) is converted by enzymatic processes to the vitally necessary anti-aging steroids, pregnenolone, progesterone and DHEA. These substances are required to help prevent heart disease, senility, obesity, cancer and other diseases associated with aging and chronic degenerative diseases.
Weight loss stimulating properties of coconut oil - a direct result of thyroid stimulation
In the 1940’s farmers tried coconut oil to fatten their animals but discovered that it made them lean and active and increased their appetite. Whoops! Then they tried an anti-thyroid drug. It made the livestock fat with less food but was found to be a carcinogen (cancer causing drug). In the late 1940’s, it was found that the same anti-thyroid effect could be achieved by simply feeding animals soybeans and corn.

Cool! If my thyroid is acting up again maybe coconut oil might help. I know that if the TSH levels aren't too off they won't subscribe medicine. Which is fine cuz I never liked being on synthroid anyway.
They don't have too much good to say about Flax and Safflower oil though. I think I'm gonna check out your journal DP and see how you are incorporating it into your meals.

I went to the supp store today to find the coconut oil. All they had was this stuff by Spectrum that says its great for hair and skin. The clerk said people buy it for cooking but she doesn't know how it tastes. The package says its 100% refined Coconut Oil.
Do you think this is good to use?

Should be the same.......you can call Spectrum or visit their website...but the word "refined" is distracting.
Mine form Omega say 100% Organic, "ideal for cooking"...the label also goes on....."expeller pressed w/o the use of chemicals, additives, solvents or bleaching"
So I would do more research first........Spectrum does make some good oils, but...
and If you can't find anything...I have a Spectrum rep I can call tomorrow!
DP
I couldn't find anything on it on their website so I called them. I had to leave a message and they are suppose to call me back.
However I did find this on the interet.
A word about Spectrum coconut oil. We carry this product, and have it on the shelves of our Health and Beauty section. We had a customer come in and buy it, and then be concerned whether she could use it for food. She called Spectrum and they told her that while yes, it was food grade, it was processed with hexane, a petroleum derivative.

That's Ludicrious!
As things seem to happen....the Spectrum rep just happened to call me minutes ago (He is also my Oregon Chai rep)
He said that Spectrum makes a "Food Grade, 100% organic CO in a glass jar" and "Cosmetic grade, in a plastic tub"...any store that can can get one, should be albe to get the other!
I would still opt for Omega Nutrition!![]()
The supp store doesn't have the glass jar one. I told the supp store around here SUCK ASS!
I will be back in NH in 2 weeks where I can have a real supplement store again.
Well I guess I'll just use it for now, it was cheap enough.

Spectrum called me back and they said it is fine for cooking. They also said that many people are going back to the refined version of the CO because the unrefined can't seem to handle the higher heat and it tends to smoke. Just an FYI!![]()

Here in the UK, you can get Bart Spices, Patak and Blue Dragon (I think) creamed coconut from supermarkets. It's about 60p for 200g. It's 67% coconut oil and makes a nice drink mixed with boiling water. It's great added to curries, too.
You may or may not have noticed from the thread welcoming me here that I have secondary hypothyroidism (caused by a defective pituitary). You may find the following story of interest.
In October 2002, I had TSH=0.2, FT4=9.8pmol/l (dunno what units you use in the USA) and FT3=3.9pmol/l. Where I live, the lower limits for TSH, FT4 and FT3 are 0.3, 9.0 and 3.5 respectively. A week before I had a TRH test, I read about coconut oils effect on metabolism and drank 40g of creamed coconut per day. When I had the TRH test at the end of November 2002, the results were TSH=0.03 and FT4=~15 at the start of the test (before I was injected with TRH).
So my TSH had fallen to virtually zero, but my FT4 had risen. Was this due to the coconut oil? I didn't change anything else in my diet. Suffice it to say I'm continuing to eat creamed coconut.![]()

I saw your other thyroid post and TCD suggesting I reply.....I looked for an article on reverse T-3 at that time (I thought I had posted), and not finding it, I got sidetracked. I want you to know that I am not a Doctor, while I do advise a few.
TSH, an anterior Pituitary hormone is widely misunderstood....at the onset of hypothyroidism........it is usually elevated.....signaling the body to increase T4 production. Doctors will usually prescribe T4 (synthyroid, throxine) at this point. A big mistake IMHO, and you mentioned having been on it, a possible complication! A more prudent course of medication is Armour Thyroid (more complete), or a combination T3/T4 replacement (if you chose that route). Once TSH declines and the Thyroid is thrashed, if there is inadequate T4, again the doctors reach for Synthyroid/Thyroxine......instead of Stimulating TSH production (the cause if the problem). We do this with iodine (Kelp, Bladderack, etc), natural diiodothyronine, and or desciated thyroid (which is a natural HRT) If you are going to medicate, time released T3 (Triiodothyronine) or regular Cytomel is a much better chioce.
I think there is a high probability that you ARE NOT converting T4 to T3 (depending on your other symptoms, know as Wilson's syndrome...not disease), and you should use my name and search here under Thyroid, Wilson's Syndrome, reverse T3....etc here. Also.......before going down the path of HRT...you may want to consider a last ditch effort to stimulate TSH
DP
I don't want this post to go off-topic! It's supposed to be about coconut oil, right?
The reason I mentioned my thyroid condition here was because drinking creamed coconut appeared to increase my thyroid gland's production of T4 despite my TSH having fallen to virtually zero (which should have reduced the thyroid's production of T4)
I have had FT4 and FT3 tested which shows that I am converting O.K. I had low TSH (0.2) for 1.25 years before I received thyroxine, so that's got nothing to do with my TSH.
My problem is that my pituitary is not responding to TRH from the hypothalamus. It's knackered. My consultant refused outright to prescribe T3 on the grounds that people had died taking it. This is not a problem for me as I am converting T4 O.K. My body temperature has risen from 35.9C to 37.1C since 4th December 2002. My mental functions are coming back to life.
If you want to discuss any more medical stuff, better move to the other topic.
