    Exclamation cereal help

i need help. i eat cereal at least three times a day, and I need to know what types are not the simple carb, unhealthy junk. cereal is one of the quickest meals i can make, and with the skim or 1% I use, I think it's pretty healthy (correct me if I'm wrong). I'm 16 years old and have a quick metabolism, eating around 3700-4000 calories a day, gaining <1 lb. a week.

please post your ideas on the healthiest cereals to eat. thanks.

    nice monolith.

How does this sound though. Currently, I'm using some frosted mini-wheats (for flavor) with mostly Special-K normal flavor cereal. Is this all simple carbs, or are these things complex (I eat this stuff quite often right before I go to bed cause its so convenient).

Oh ya, I'm also using some packets of oatmeal and bagels.

I know the packets are supposed to be bad and all but I can't figure out why. The ingredients say its made with whole grain rolled oats, it has 3 grams fiber, low fat, not an extreme amount of sugar (13 grams). Mixed with whey protein which is virtually tasteless in it, it's a really healthy meal right?

On the bagel side, I'm not so sure though. It has 4 grams fiber,8 grams sugar, but I'm pretty sure its simple carbs. It's main ingredient is refined unbleached flour. Am I correct on it being simple?

    Any feedback would be appreciated.

cereal isn't a great choice of carbs, unless your eating oatmeal (the non-flavored, non-instant crap) or something like Fiber One.

Your also better off using whole milk, as the fat in the milk will help slow down the digestion and help to stabilize insulin levels a bit more (however, the whole milk won't offset the crappy carbs your eating).

Generally, all cereals (and bagels) are "fast-burning carbs" ...meaning they convert rapidly to sugar within your system. So in a nut shell you wanna avoid them. Seeing that you're 16, I wouldn't worry about it too much...although 3 "meals" of cereal a day isn't very balanced...you should try to get protein and fat and make it a full meal. The sugared packets of oatmeal have SUGAR in them...that's what makes them bad....much better option would be to use plain oats and add a sweetner and some cinnamon to it. If you're going to use a cereal...go for one that is low in sugar and high in fibre

Yes bagels are simple carbs, as well as cereal. Like W8 said, seeing you ar eonly 16-yuou cna get away with it- but THREE meals of cereal is not balanced nor what you need to grow your muscles! A bagel with Peanut Butter and some protein powder is far far better than a bowl of cereal...Hope this helps

thanks guys. i'll try to balance out my meals - maybe, 1 bowl of cereal a day and cut the bagels out completely.
any suggestions on quick fix meals that would be good replacements though. i'm going for 3700 calories a day and it gets very hard without these quickies.

Shit...in deleting that ass I accidentally deleted a legitimate post :o Sorry!

I t was about raisins....no, adding raisins to the oats is bad....Raisins are nothing more than sugar! If you're gonna eat something w/ sugar in it that you shouldn't have, at least make it something w/ something else in it besides sugar....like a banana

I'm gonna try to find some of those "steel cut oats" w8 suggested cause the regular quaker oates taste like shit without brown sugar which kind of defeats the whole purpose.

i just started eating some of them myself on a suggestion from w8. it doesn't look all that appetizing, but with a couple tbsp's of natty pb mixed in, its good stuff.
