Flax...Fish Oil...one or the other or both?

I tried searching for the answer to my question before posting it. Is it necessary to take both or one or the other?
Thanks in advance for your replies.

I was wondering the same thing....also, my hubby asked why flax....he is trying to gain weight, as I am trying to lose. I *think* from what I have read, its beneficial for both of us. Am I wrong?

Flax/fish oil will help both of you with losing fat and gaining LBM. 1 tbsn of flax will add about 126 kcals to your diet. Flax also increases insulin sensitivity and leptin signalling in the brain (both good things). It also helps with inflammation and various other things which i can't recall off the top of my head.

Fish oils are preferred over flax by some because flax has to be converted to EPA/DHA by your body. Caffiene can interfere with this conversion so you won't be getting all of the benefits of the EPA/DHA. Fish oil already has EPA/DHA in it. You also get the same amount of EPA/DHA in 1g (1 pill) of fish oil as you get in about 10g of flax (if i remember correctly). Fish oil is also the only oil that is shown to increase leptin signalling in the brain (that is a good thing in all respects [bulking or cutting]).

On the other hand, flax has some benefits that fish oils don't have. The lignans in flax supposedly have some anti-estrogen properties. In a few studies flax has been shown to be as effective as nolvadex as an anti-e. Flax is also less expensive than fish oil, and if you get the seeds you can get your fiber from them too.

I guess i just answered my own question, lol.

    LOL...I think you just did

One thing about the lignans I read recently, other than the fact that they seems to protect from certain cancers, was that they can also surpress test. I`ll see if I can find the page I read that on and post it for you.

Some people take 40g of fish oil per day. I'd say for you to use about 10-15g daily, depending on how much money you can afford to spend on it.

Holy Carp! 40 grams? Whew. So we're talking about 10-15 caps a day? (toolguy's doseage, that is)
I've only seen Flax and Fish Oils in capsule form. Does anyone sell them as liquid? Seems like it would make life easier.

I use flax oil (not pills). I have read that it is good to take 1tbsp. for every 50lbs. of bodyweight.

Just look at GNC for flax in a bottle or, up here in NY and in Boston they have vitamin shoppe, which is were I get mine. You may be able to find a vitamin in S.Carolina, I think it is an East Coast thing.

I have seen fish oil in a liquid form also but I don't have the guts to try that one. (yuk).

The caps are okay but expensive becuase you have to pop so many of them to get a healthy amount. Plus the flax oil is great for topping meals and shakes with.

I saw some Flax Oil (unrefrigerated) in capsule form the other day. The manufacturer claimed that the oil was protected from oxidation via some sort of nitrogen "blanketing system"..yada yada yada.
My question is, would this be worth the risk vs. spending more $ for refrigerated oil in a bottle?

Usually the caps are more expensive that the bottle because you need to take 14 caps to equal 1 tbsp oil?

I've also found out just recently that most companies that make flax nitrogen flush the oil, so there is no need to worry about refridgeration until after you have opened the bottle.
