    Pistachios...a man's best friend?

I am addicted to pistachios and I occasionally use them as my fat source in meals (e.g., 8oz chicken breast, cup of broccoli and a handful of pistachios (okay maybe two). But I never hear anyone talk about them, be it positively or negatively. I do not get a lot of other fat in my diet so they fill that rrole. Am I doing myself more harm than good?

ALL nuts are good in moderation. They are loaded with healthy fats. I LOVE pistachios. Well, I love the regular ones. I don't understand why people eat the red ones and get food coloring all over themselves for no reason.

    MMmmmmmm Pistachio's!!

I love them and once in a great while use for fat source too but like most nuts - very caloric dense.

I agree IAB - Red ones suck.

Are the red ones simply dyed? I didn't know that. Ridiculous.

Jodi, a question about once in a while. I definitely work the numbers into my food totals for the day. But I have been eating them everyday. Sometimes I have sunflower seeds instead (especially when I have salads). I guess it's easier for me to eat the nuts instead of adding oil. Is that wrong?

It is just food coloring. The red dye adds no extra calories or anything. I never understood why they get colored red. It's not like walnuts and almonds get colored purple or yellow.

They are HIGH fat content too. If they are anything like walnuts they are high in fat. Walnuts have like 18 g of fat in 1 oz That is not very much to eat...only a sample...just enough to get your mouth going. I love nuts but I stay away from them...with my limited fat intake per meal I can only have like a 1/2 oz...why bother

You said handful or two I don't know, but I bet that is a ton of fat.

You really should make sure you have a good balance of EFA's. Yes nuts are a souce of EFA's they are mostly monounsaturaed fat and not nearly enough Poly. Flax oil is going to be your best source for Poly. Mix it up. One meal have nuts and next have Flax.

*****There are also many other sources of EFA's, I'm just using examples*****
