    Coconut Oil...

After doing some searching and reading in various thread I see that some people incorporate coconut oil into there diets along with flax. For instance in a thead by Jodi she's eating 2 tsp flax and 2 tsp coconut oil on the same day. I've been reading about the benefits of coconut oil and I want to start taking it. My question is if I currently take 2 tablespoons of flax (1 am, 1 pm) should I split that with coconut oil (1 tbsp flax am, 1 tbsp coco pm) and is that ok for daily use??

    BTW... Thanks Doc

TJohn there are better people to answer this but I'll take my stab at it.

If heard and read that its better to have multiple fat sources per meal. For instance have 1/2 T CO and 1/2 T Flax instead of just Flax or just CO. I wish I could find where I read that but I knows its on here somewhere. I'll try to find it later.

Thanks Jodi! And are you kidding!! You've got tons of great info here

Makes perfect sense to me about multiple fat sourses per meal. I do that now but on a per day basis. Was just curious about coconut oil after reading some serious good stuff about it. Maybe I'll give it a try.

    Thanks TJohn!

I highly suggest stir frying or sauteeing with it. Foods come out so yummy when cooked in CO!

Well it's coming up on grilling season here so cooking in the kitchen will be limited to preparing salads and cutting / chopping things so stir frying and sauteeing will be pretty much out. I'm thinking more like mixing it in a mid afternoon snack or something. BTW, have you heard anything about poly's producing mass amounts of free radicals?? The more I read about CO the more I find all this other crazy stuff. As a matter of fact .... here...

Polyunsaturated oils, including flaxseed oil, are eas_ily oxidized. When it oxidizes it kicks off a series of free-radical chain reactions that affects all molecules around it. Millions of molecules can be destroyed or oxidized by the generation of a single free radical. Cholesterol that is in close proximity to a polyunsaturated oil that is becoming oxidized, as is the case in lipoproteins, will also become oxidized. These oxidized, free-radical damaged oils are absorbed into the lining of the artery walls and contribute to the forma_tion of plaque. Non-oxidized fats are incorporated into the cells as they should be, and do not end up as plaque depos_its. Here is the warning: even though alpha-linolenic acid may lower total cholesterol, it actually contributes to ath_erosclerosis and all forms of cardiovascular disease. It does this by causing the oxidization of cholesterol and other fats, both of which are components to arterial plaque.2

My opinion (remember its mine only) is that

    1. I think this is a biased article because they are mainly about selling CO products.
    2. Nobody ever said FLax should be the only source of EFA's. I use several because they all have their benefits

Despite my own diet not comprising of all of them, i reckon the "ideal diet" [TM] should consist of the following fats:

Fish oils (4-8g/day) for leptin issues regarding the BBB (and direct EPA/DHA intake).

    Flax oil for extra w-3.

But overall, not excessive amounts of PUFA's in the diet, cause too many can also be a bad thing.

Olive oil, cause it's a MUFA and has potential UCP activity associated with it.

MCT oil like coconut oil, which have some metabolic/thyroid association which can be beneficial.

Saturated fat from protein/carb sources for cell membrane issues. Also, the protein sources with sat-fat (whole eggs, beef etc) also tend to have cholesterol which can be beneficial for hormone production and steroidogenesis.

Walnut oil, cause it is blatantly the nicest tasting oil going.

    And...yeah.

Obviously integrate all into your calorie requirements for whatever diet you're on. Depending on the ratios allowed, you may not have space for all of them, but i'd definately include fish oils in there primarily.
