    my diet

I'm a 23 year old female. I am 5"3 and I currently weigh approximately 130lbs. Based on my height and age, I am slightly overweight. My goal is to lose 8 pounds. I go to the gym 2-3 times a week and I try to watch what I eat. Here is what I eat during the day.

Meal 1: 1 cup of honey oats cereal
    1/2 cup of whole milk

Meal 2: 1 cup of yogurt
    tuna fish sandwich

Meal 3: 2 boneless chicken cutlets (baked)
    2oz aparagus
    1/2 cup of white rice

I usually snack between these meals on some kind of fruit like pineapples, peaches, or strawberries. I drink nothing but water throughout the day. I don't know what I'm doing wrong . I've been trying this for weeks and I haven't seen a change. Can you please help me find a diet that is right for me? Thanx.

    Hi cat! Welcome to IM!

The first thing I can tell you is that you are not eating enough and what your eating is not your best food choices.

When you say, got to the gym. Please tell me what you do there. Do you lift?

Please check out these to start learning about nutrition in general.

Another thing, don't base your body on the Standard guidlines or by your doctor. Everyone is different. According to those guidlines I'm about 15 pounds overweight and I can tell for your that I'm not overweight. Its all about body composition and not what the scale says. You have to look in the mirror and be happy with what you see, not what someone else tells you what you should look like.

To speed up your metabolism you need to eat 5-6 times a day. Is this something your willing to do? Also, check out my journal, Julie's journal, Buff and many others to see what we eat. We are all different but pretty much the same goal. Lose Body fat and try to retain Lean Body Mass.

Thanx for the advice! I feel a lot better now. I can definitely eat 5-6 times a day. I know I jsut have to watch what I eat. When I go to the gym I spend a half hour doing weight training exercises and a another half hour doing cardio exercises. My main problem I have with my body right now is my flabby abs. I can't seem to tone them down. Do you have any suggestions on how to tone your abs?

Abs are made in the kitchen.

In order to flatten your tummy you need to eat right. You could do all the crunches in the world but without proper nutrition you won't get far.

Lets start by looking at your meal.

Meal 1: 1 cup of honey oats cereal
    1/2 cup of whole milk

You have no protein in this meal. In fact there is nothing in this meal that will help you lose Body Fat. You would be much better off with a slow burning carb like Old Fashioned Oats, and some protein like 2 whole and 4 egg whites or 30G of protein powder. The milk has too much sugar in it.

Meal 2: 1 cup of yogurt
    tuna fish sandwich

Yogurt is not your best choice either because of the amount of sugar in it. The tuna is good but what kind of bread are you eating? Most of us here don't even eat bread. Better choice would be a can of tuna, some green fibrous veggies and an oil based dressing like Newman's or Drew's

Meal 3: 2 boneless chicken cutlets (baked)
    2oz aparagus
    1/2 cup of white rice

The chicken and asparagus are good but you need to start thinking smaller portions. 4oz. of cooked chicken with some green veggies and 4 oz. sweet potato and maybe some butter or when your ready some EFA's (essential fatty acids)
Now you need to work on changing your meals above and then slowly start adding in additional meals. You don't want to go too fast or you will gain fat. Your metabolism is in starvation mode right now because your not eating enough.

Please read those links and if you'd like start a journal and we can help you start getting you on the right path. Please read about EFA's, slow burning carbs and insulin for sure. They play an important part of losing bodyfat.

Wow. I didn't know I was eating all the wrong stuff! This is definitely good to know. I'm going to go out and by some protein powder tomorrow. Is there any particular type or brand I should get?

You need to get one that is low carb and low sugar. Alot of us here use 100% Whey by Optimum Nutrition (black label). You will find it cheaper by ordering it online. I get mine at www.1fast400.com

Just make sure to start out slowly here. You don't want to jump into this.
