Nutrients for older lifter
Nutrients for older lifter
Just turned 58. Been lifting seriously for about five years; nothing much before that. I drink BCAA's during lifting, I drink protein shake w/creatine & l-glutamine after workout. In gym about four-five times a week; lift for about 1.5 hours, then at least 20 min cardio, then stretch. My question is this: at my age, are BCAA's, protein shake, creatine, l-glut, all necessary? In other words, am I too old to benefit from any/all such? And/or, can any of such be harmful to an older guy?
i am 52 been lifting since i was 15 and serious lifting since i was 20. i lift on the average 4-5 times a week, i have my own gym. in short i have been pretty much dedicated to bodybuilding all my life. i have used whey proteins and all kinds of supplements and steroid once (i will never do it again). right now it has been a year that i have stopped all kinds of supplements except fish oil and vitamins from time to time because i am convinced that they will do more harm than good, i follow a very healthy natural diet and i can tell you the following from my own experience:
1- after 50 you can still build muscle and maintain strength naturally.
2-no need for supplements at all it is all in your head, maybe if you want some BCAA and vitamins.
3- some might disagree no problem, but this is my experience
4- training and lifting form and quality is essential
Well I *was* going to chime in, but I got nuthin!
I do use Osteo Bi-Flex. It has gelatin that's supposed to support collagen production.
Sounds like you might be familiar with Chek; The truth about dirt - on youtube.
^^^ i was familiar with Chek but did not really hear what he has to say, i just did and he is right on many points, i even saw what he has to say about protein and it corresponds to what i was saying on other threads, excess protein is not good, my source of protein is natural food and if i calculate it i eat about 50-70g a day at 75 kg of body weight that is around 0.5g per pound and i see no difference from the days i used to take supplements , i even feel better although i am older. i eat more vegetables especially dandelion is pretty good for you, i also make a lentil soup with carrots and potatoes in it, some egg whites and turkey breast...things like that.
you are right about gelatin that could be useful after 40.
I do the same as you but add vitamin c & e post workout.

EFA's are a lifter's best friend old or not. Research the benefits when you get some time.
BTW, much respect for those of you who are still hitting it hard all these years.
