On the topic of grapefruits, I had to write a sample Q&A for a column that IronMan may be interested having me regularly contribute to, so I might as well get some feedback on one of them:
Q. It has long been suggested, anecdotally, to use grapefruit for dieting, and I have recently been seeing claims of benefits with androgen use as well. What is the story on this??
A. As with so many things, science will eventually show that what many have “known” for years, was neither myth nor wives-tale. In the case of grapefruit, it all has to do with an enzyme system known as Cytochrome-450. The CYP-450 system catalyzes phase 1 metabolism of just about every drug or other xenobiotic that you can put in your body. In the case of grapefruit, this is attributed to inhibition of CYP-1A2 and CYP-3A4, respectively.
CYP-1A2 shares its affinity for grapefruit components with both caffeine and nicotine, both known to increase lipolysis and both very well known by those who have attempted dieting in the past.
The popular mainstream “Mayo Clinic Diet”, which most of us have had parents try out or have tried out ourselves, has on the menu, ½ grapefruit and black coffee, 3 times per day. Whether they knew it or not, this combination would increase caffeine levels in the blood. The same would be the case in regard to nicotine, for those that smoked, in conjunction with their grapefruit diet.
CYP-3A4 , which catalyzes 6beta-hydroxylation of testosterone, a major pathway for testosterone metabolism, was found to be inhibited by 50% by the grapefruit component bergamottin, at micromolar concentrations and 100%, at millimolar concentrations. CYP-3A4 is only 1 of 6 major phase I pathways for testosterone metabolism, so do not jump all over the first supplement you see touting this effect, but it will indeed increase bioavailability and half-life of testosterone.
The increase in area under curve for testosterone quite likely added to the CYP-1A2 mediated enhancement of fat loss our dieters unknowingly used grapefruit for as well.
