    super cheap food

    hi all

i am an *extremely* poor college student right now and i have been having trouble finding good things to eat that are also CHEAP. any ideas? I'm trying for a budget of $50 a week max if thats possible.... keep in mind I do not have access to a stove or normal oven - my options are microwave or toaster oven for food prep. thanks so much!

Make Tuna and Eggs your friend. Super cheap and great protein. Costco, BJ's or Sam's Club is a great place to stock up and buy bulk providing you have the freezer space.

Well Eggs are not that cheap. Not in Canada for sure.
The best price for my proteine are my Whey protein.
I buy it in 11 pounds back and it come up to 0.84$ per mix of 35 gram of protein.
Chicken when it's on sale can be cheaper than that, at 6.59$/kg 35 gram of Protein cost about 0.74$.
EGGs and Tuna are actually the most expensive source of protein compare to chicken on sale and whey protein.
But sometime the Tuna get on sale then it could be cheaper. The sale have to be big. Like 0.99$ for 2 can of light tuna in water will give you about 50gram protein so it's 0.50$ for 25 gam protein.

For Carb, I get 20 pounds bag of rice and I pai 15$ (long grain brown rice) That is very cheap and you don't have to eat a lot of rice to get the amount of carb you need. Also you can get 20 pounds bag of OATS that is even cheaper than the rice because you eat less oat for the same amount of rice to get your carb.

I agree eggs is usually one of your cheepest protein sources. Also look into low fat cottege cheese - excellent protein with long lasting delivery due to slow digestion. Also look into fat free powdered milk. It has a fair number of carbs in the from of lactose sugar but I think it has its place and milk protein is pretty good stuff too.

When my uncle Stanley lost his job, he ate rice by the gallon. Sometimes he shaped the rice into food he loved but couldn't buy. He could shape it into chicken legs or hams or covered wagons. He eventually got scurvy and threatened the neighbor with a hatchet. His doctor said he needed other stuff besides rice. Now he HATES rice and refuses to acknowledge its existence. He calls it "field corn" and spits real hard when he pronounces the "f."

No kidding pat. I was surprised at the cost of most food in CAN. I can find eggs here for .75-1.00/dozen with no problem. I did however like the eggs with Omega 3 oil that I had while in CAN. Oh yeah, and the beer.

Sounds like astral is starving his brains out in a dorm room. I remember that all too well. Is there a meal plan you can get on there? I would eat for hours on the meal plan. I was still competing in college and had to find a way to get my calories up. What better way that to be a glutton on the scholls meal plan. lol

But tuna nd eggs are hard to beat for cheap. The gas afterwards can be hard to stand though. Good luck.

0.75$ for a dozen of Eggs. Man here I pay 1.80 for 12 eggs. That's why I don't have egg in my diet...

I don't understand why you guys say that Eggs is cheaper?
    I pay 80$ for 5kg of SportLab Whey concentrate/isolate.
2 scoops of whey is 45 gram for 35 gram of protein per serving.
    0.72$ for one serving.

It's about the same price as the Eggs for the same amount of protein...
And it's way easier to eat and more convenient.

Turkey burgers, $5 for 12 (US dollars), 28g protein each, I believe 11g fat (some cooks off) and 13% USRDA sodium. I use pepper and garlic powder and its actually quite edible, I use a George Foreman style electric grill for 15-20 minutes and voila.

If you have a bulk food store like Costco, Sams Club, Smart and Final etc then those are the places to shop.

Did anyone see that news report on mecury levels in Tuna? There was some guy on there saying that if the fishing industry didn't exert pressure on the FDA that it would have banned the sale of it. Makes you wonder just how high the mercury levels are.

I like tuna, but I'm not eating it much anymore. Just don't trust it anymore.

Back on topic: Eggs are probably one of the cheaper options There's nothing wrong with eating raw veggies (broccoli, spinach, califlower etc.) You can buy chicken breast and cook them all one day and throw them in the fridge freezer for the rest of the week. (Costco has a pack of 12-15 raw chicken breast for about $15 or so)

You can get a hotplate and a skillet and a pot to cook in your dorm room. Shouldn't cost that much. That would allow you to cook different things. Black and Decker sells a steamer for not to much. You can cook rice in it as well and it just plugs into a wall outlet. So, you are not limited to only cooking in a toaster oven or microwave.

I was just going to say, Tuna has mercury and some people get nervous taking that crap into the body. I have about a can a day and no more, lately I have not been having any for no particular reason. I have had large amounts of tuna and never had adverse affects, but still the buildup because of the crap in our water doesn't seem cool.

Eggs, just dont eat more than around 20 cooked eggs a day as this supposedly causes a big biotin problem, I can repost an article or two if needed but if you search biotin you will turn something up, as I have posted several times on it. This goes semi-hand in hand with the raw food movement.

A foreman grill you can cook just about any kind of burger (turkey) etc and it will drain alot of the fat out. Just read the label, I have seen fat laden low protein burgers and mine are pretty decent. 28g protein, 13% sodium, I believe 13g fat some of which cooks off. There are also ground turkey breast patties which will be even leaner.
