check out the sticky threads for Newbies...tons of good info there.
Hi. I'm so glad I found this forum. Well, I'll get straight to the point. I worked out for 3 or 4 years religously and went from 135 lbs. and scrawny to 190 lbs. The problem is that I gained some fat in the process, which I knew was part of the process, but I don't know how to cut up.
I know that diet is everything, so if anyone has any sample diets or tips, I'm all ears.
Also, how much cardio should I do?

Yea what freeman said. Also,, Welcome aboard.
Diet isn't "everything" but it is important.
Bottom line is you have to create a caloric deficit between how many calories you take in and how many you burn. This is done by ingesting less calories AND increasing activity (cardio).
I would suggest you start out with 3 days per week of moderate intensity cardio for 20 minutes and then you can add on from there.
I disagree. Diet is THE most important part IMO! You can lift and run all you want but if your diet is shit, then you look like shit.![]()

Jodi, you can also diet all you want but without training you are not going to build any muscle and burn fat.
I never said your diet can be shit but I think sometimes people put more emphasis on their diet and are very meticulous about what they eat and they forget to train hard.
Ok I understand what your saying, but that still depends on the persons goal. Your training hard and someone else's training hard can mean 2 different things. Not that this is the case here but remember, most women don't want big huge bulging muscle, they just want to be lean. So therefore they lift lighter and smaller weights than they could probably handle and rarely go to failure, therefore diet is way more important here then their training. Not everyone wants a huge physique.

Still depends on the person I think. I've seen people that eat snickers bars and drink soda all the time and are still lean - though I hate them for it.Originally posted by Jodi

Homer: Hey! I saved your life! That egg sandwich could have killed you by cholesterol.
Lenny: Pfft, forget it, Homer. While it has been established that eggs contain cholesterol, it has not yet been proven conclusively that they actually raise the level of serum cholesterol in the human
blood stream.![]()

Those are the genetically lucky, I know I am not that type of person, I have to fight for every ounce of muscle and % of bodyfat.
You both have good points but the DIET is the most important goal to achieve that goes for bulking big time or to slim and shine(okay, i don't know what that's about).
Your diet isn't good without a workout and your workout isn't good without a diet. But the diet counts for about 70% in you lifestyle, training is made up of 20% and 10% relies on rest/recovery. But have you ever heard the saying "you are what you eat"!
If you goal is to stay slim then you still have to eat healthy even if you burn so much calories in the gym, the same goes for lifting you can't get big by just lifting heavy weight, you have to eat calories. Sure heavy weight does help but how are you gonna get big without the diet.
Consistancy and Variation is the key to success
A+ answer Jodi. No doubt that diet should be your number 1 concern and that is regardless to wether you workout or not. it is as simple an analogy as "what you put in the more you get out".Originally posted by Jodi

Diet is more important than anything. You only spend an average hour in the gym. What comes next? Of course eat all day. Clean though.
