Question Food makes me sleepy. Is this normal?

Oftentimes after I eat a solid meal, I feel sleepy, esp later in the day. My whole body feels heavier kind of like when you are already asleep. This can be great when I need to fall asleep but sometimes it's hard to fall asleep otherwise.

Does anybody have any comments regarding this?

This often happens after you eat a high carb meal due to release of hormones into your system which causes blood sugar levels to move around. It is perfectly normal.

Ideally as a lifter the idea is to regulate your blood sugar for optimal amounts at the right times throughout the day, which will keep your energy levels stable.

Ponyboy is right you could be coming down from blood sugar high but what are you eating that is making your blood sugar increase so much? Also, turkey has that affect on me.

Turkey is full of tryptophan...which converts to serotonin in the blood...which makes you sleepy and euphoric.

That's why we all fall asleep after a Thanksgiving meal!

Happens to me too...I've been really worried lately that I might be hyper/hypoglycemic or something...I just came off a cyclical keto diet and have been having 3 protein+carb and 3 protein+fat meals a day (two protein+carb meals prior to training, post-workout meal of whey, casein and oats, and two predominantly protein+fat meals following...I take in about 110-130g of carbs on a daily basis), and have experienced a dip in energy. This isn't exactly a good thing, considering I have university classes to attend. I swear, I felt so much better on the keto diet, I've read that I should be doing things in reverse, eating protein and fats prior to training, and protein and carbs in the 6 hours following, but I'm far too paranoid about excess adipose tissue formation. Can someone point me towards the right direction? I'm honestly fearful that I'm sick or something.

Peace.

I do eat a lot of carbs. Most of my meals are at least 60 grams of carbs. I always crave things like rice (not brown rice), pasta, potatoes, bread. Even when I buy sweets I ceave baked things like cookies or brownies, which are usually 50% and 50% complex carbs.

Dude only eating excess cals will make you fat. Look for your threshold while eating carbs. Typicially you need 2* your bodywieght. Of course when you do try this monitor your fat.

Usually cravings mean you are missing something from you diet. Perhaps not enought "Complex" carbs. By the way nothing is wrong with a potato. In my opinion.

Serotonin cannot pass the blood-brain barrier, although tryptophan is neccessary for the production of serotonin.
