    Question Weight Gain

I want to gain weight. I don't lift weights, but I work in a wharehouse where I lift many heavy items throughout the day.Example 40lb bags dog food, water, and cases of cans.I was told when I got hired that I would be lifting 50,000 lbs per day and I work four 10 hr days.So even though I dont body build with weights, I'm actually working out in a sense. My question is I'm 5'11'' and I only weigh 140 can I gain weight just by changing my diet alone without supplements,by eating more calories and protien?

I used to lift 185 pound TV sets in a warehouse, crappy job

If you dont workout I dont see you gaining good weight personally.

Yes, if you eat you will gain weight, but that type of lifting is not the same as "bodybuilding", it's more along the lines of endurance exercise.

I agree fully, I weighed 230 at my peak in a warehouse and unfortunately it was not good weight. You do a little of this and that, but you dont do consitent movements to "failure" like you do in a gym, its NOT the same thing.

I honestly dont predict good weight gain, from my own experience. I had a hard time going to the gym somedays, once I had to unload a 48 foot truck NOT palletized, by myself. This means when the rollers get jammed I freed the jam. I had to push everything out box by box, I wish I could remember the peice count.

Then after things were on the rollers, I had to scan them one by one by moving to the front of the truck. Basically I moved as fast as I possibly could (this means running) for 8 hours straight with only breaks long enough to down some of the 2 liter soda I brought in, it was gone within about 90 minutes. I had severe chafing on the insides of my legs from that day, those are the days that you feel you aged 10 years and dont feel like going to the gym at all. After scanning stuff I had to load them on "U-Boats" and then roll them down the isles. The entire 48 feet were unloaded by me by the end of my shift. This could be anything from TVs to toaster ovens.

Anyhow, from my own experience if you dont go to a gym then dont look to gain more than maybe 10 pounds, it does not substitute lifting.

At a 140# means you must have a fast metabolisim or just don't eat. So It may workout in your favor, look at constructions workers. You will gain weight some fat and some muscle but overall you maybe become thicker rather than muscular, but that wouldn't be all the bad at you weight

Thnx for your replies guys. I do eat 6 meals a day . 3000+ Calories and 150 grams of Protein. I think I'm eating smarter now though because even though I use to eat 3 times a day most it it was junk food.My first goal is not to get huge with muscles. My goal is to obtain a healthy diet and put on weight.I have been at 140# for 6 years,my metabolisim must be fast.Any ways if I gained 10 lbs of fat only that would be great, remember im 140.Eventually I will weight lift ,I dont have the resources now to do so.Would push ,pull and sit ups help me? That dont cost money.Hey Mudge my peice count is 1950 per day 4 days a week 52 weeks a yr and ive been there for one yr now.We have a thing called "quick pick" that means if you hit your 1950 cases b4 the 10 hour day is up u leave work early.I leave work after only 7 hours of work per day.My muscles from head to toe are burning all day long for 7 hrs.You cant tell me im not working them.Ok i know its not the same as lifting heavy weights .Like I said I curently dont have those resources yet to do so.Thnx for any aditional comments.By the way should I up my cals to 3500 seeing fat gain would be ok for my light body.

Ah, I feel your pain. Weight lifting can get costly if you let it. My home gym is so low budget that I'm sure it would make most of you laugh. It's made up of one beach with some dumbbells and an ass load of concrete free weights. My newset creation is 35lbs dumbbells with a 8.8lb concrete duck taped on each end and wrapped in two bilo bags wrapped in more duck tape. Like I said it's really low budget but it keep the weight from falling and breaking my skull buring tri hammers.
Sorry don't mean to ramble. Getting to the point. I was 140 but after doing a shit load of wieghted dips and chin ups now I weigh 160. It only took a little over two months so it worked out pretty good. Maybe that will help ya.

Work your ass off and go home for less pay? Or do you get the full days pay

I also used to lift the Sauder entertainment centers into place, we'd stack them up to around 7 foot or so, some of them were over 200 pounds in the box, I wish I could remember the poundages better.

I get paid for the 10 hrs of work.I just dont have to stay the whole 10 hours.I use to lift sauder too when i worked for Office Depot. This job I have now is by far the hardest work I have ever had to do.Alot of the guys at my work are muscular there is about 3 140# wimps and I'm one of them.I've been on the high calorie high protein diet for 4 days now and I havent gained a pound.I think I need to start lifting but I dont have the resources. Is there so things I can do at home with a bar like pull ups or chin ups for my biceps?Maybe push ups?sit ups?

Judging from the sounds of the work you do, you are doing activity for up to seven hours a day...which means you are also burning calories seven hours a day. This means that you are going to have to increase the amount you're taking in.

If you have been on 3000 calories per day for a few weeks and seen no changes, bump it up to 3500 and see what happens. You may even need to go up to 4000-4500 to really get some solid gains going.

If you post your typical daily diet we can help as well...however I have a hard time believing you're taking in 3000 calories a day if you are working hard and non stop for seven of them.
Today I can do what others will not so that tomorrow I will do what others cannot.

The difference between winners and losers is that winners do things that losers don't want to do.

If you consider that a pound of fat is going to be around 3500 calories, its going to take you awhile in caloric surplus to gain multiple, measureable pounds. Most of what people gain in weight early on is water weight, if your weight fluctuates a pound or so a day, its most likely water, so dont look to the scale daily expecting to see a change.

I have a chin up bar at home that cost me something like $35, I can post a link to it later. That is still not much in the way of movements, its certainly not a total body workout.

I used to have either a box of corndogs or a couple hot pockets, and a half gallon of chocolate milk at my lunch time. I had no problems "gaining weight"

I was at Walmart today and saw some 35 lb dumbells for $14.99.I picked one up and curled it 6 times and felt the burn lol.Maybe I can go there every day and use those lol j/k of course.I weight 133 in the morning and 139 at night . Why does my body do that?I dont go to the bath room in the middle of the night so where does the 6 lbs go?

Home scales suck for accuracy, the one at my folks house has me weighing 10 pounds less than I am. 6 pounds is an awfull lot of fluctuation, for me its 2-3 pounds or so, most of that is water weight.

It may also be a sign though that you are "starving" at night, although digestion does greatly slow during sleep.
