Definately do before and after and not just protein have some carbs too. If you workout on an empty stomach you are risking losing too much muscle. Try driving your car without any gas.

what kind of carbs? im always bein told to eat carbs (i have to buy brown rice) i need to cut down on the carbs to lose fat?
Before and after you want simple carbs, especially after. Before you could take in a more complex carb if you are going to eat at least an hour before. After training I always have a shake of whey and dextrose (simple carb).
Do you need to cut down on carbs to lose fat? It is not a simple yes and no answer. It depends on many factors such as how many carbs you are currently eating and how many calories.
To lose fat you need to create a caloric deficit. You do this by taking in slightly less calories than maintenance and by adding in cardio. Most people cut there calories from carbs however I would look at your fat intake first. Remember fat is 9 calories per gram and carbs are only 4 calories per gram.

You should get about 20% of your calories from fat. Mostly EFA's. You don't want your fat too low as your body will slow down production of testosterone.
Good post naturalguy, the only part that I disagree with you is the simple carbs sources. But that is all personal opinion, I prefer oatmeal b4 and after and would even up for some rice instead. I personally hate taking in simple suger as it makes me crave more and more.
But THat is personal chioce and weight loss comes down to cals in vs. Cals out.
