    Question Oxygen: Feb04 Issue

Ok I just got the latest issue of Oxygen. Normally I love it, but sometimes I just can't believe the so-called "advice" being dispensed by our favorite fitness models and competitors. There is a section that asks some of the competitors to describe their offseason and onseason diets and training routines. Generally, most of them do a TON of cardio, 2-3 days of light weight and eat very little. For example, Mandy Blank does 2 hrs of cardio a day and eats no starchy carbs whatsoever. What???? Is this suppose to be healthy advice??? Another article in this issue about Katie Uter sayts that she only lifts weights 2x week and uses a circuit tranining style with high reps. She says she has enough muscle (???) and just wants to maintain. Some competitors don't even train all their bodyparts. Monica Brant doesn't even train her arms...wtf??? Well, hers are built up enough so I guess that is a legit reason. But the rest of the competitors, I just don't get it....

In all seriousness if I followed did as much cardio as these women do and lifted using 12-15 reps/circuit style and ate how they do...I would be anorexic.

Just about everyone on this board adheres to a heavy, hard training routine and limited cardio to get the best results possible. Why is it that the fitness mags have us believing differently? What does everyone think of this?

I totally agree with you. I get oxygen also, 2 hours of cardio a day? Thats nuts. Ive actually read that a few times in the mag. For the most part, I think the magazine is pretty informative.

I must agree with that as well with BO. Healthy lifestyle that we believe in that they follow is a huge misconception to reality

I found myself completely shocked of the smoking, drugs and "other" things that some do!

Unfortunately I didn't get to see those issues of Oxygen but based on what I've read on the first posts.... here are my thoughts.

It's funny you mention the two hours of cardio and assuming that this a split of am (1 hour) and pm (1 hour) because I DO see a lot of people doing this.

For fat reduction, my trainer personally does not have a problem with it except that she did want me to cut back to 45 mins per session maintaining my heart rate consistently, 6 days week almost!

As for Mandy Blank and her non starchy carbs (lack of)is strange! For myself within my new eating regimen, my body gets shocked and I feel lightheaded and see white spots so surely with meals 1 & 2 NOT containing Carbs (period!), I would love to know how she compensates and replaces it as well. But everybody's body is different, I guess.

As for "other" people not training certain body parts, I can somewhat understand this because certain muscles seem to respond better than another. Genetics maybe? For example, someone would need to kick Mike Matarazzo if he only went in the gym and worked on calves. Or, kick J'bo if we saw her go in and work on abs everyday and left doing nothing else!

So, maybe it's trial and error, orthodox or unorthodox... whatever works for each individual is a big up to them. I wished I had the same advantages in certain area's as others.

We must remember that what one currently does is not necessarily how they got there.

Also, from what I have seen, a large portion of these fitness competitors get into competition, which gives them exposure, and then move on to modeling. For example, I remember seeing Mandy Blank a few years back when she took 3rd in the Olympia and she looked nothing like she does now. I believe she moved out to the west coast to try her hand at acting. Why is the song Fallen Angel by Poison playing in my mind for some reason.
If sense were common, everyone would have it.

Are you wearing lipstick or makeup like Poison?? J/K! I know what you mean. It's funny though that you mentioned Mandy though. It's true.. it's true about her looks then and now! Acting? Cool and interesting.

the bottom line is what works for someone doesn't necessarily work for everyone... while we can all give out what works for us, there will always be someone that will say, "that failed miserably for me"

But I also agree with what was said above about drugs and what not...
    Are you kidding me????

BO...Yes Cola is a big thing now adays...one of the competitors in my fed. just got banned from competing because of it

Jill...secret is cardio is overated and its not nesessary to starve yourself.

Dave...i dont do abs at all...well not often anyways

Well in all honesty...lots of cardio for a first time competitor with little muscle wont work at all...they will end up looking terrible because they have no muscle left.

Take every thing you read with a grain salt. DO you think a pro is actually going to tell you secrets that they do. I don't think so. Thats why they are pro and other people aren't. They also don't tell you how much "assistance" they may have had to get there as well. I have been in the game along time and have heard everything that women do or have done or experimented with, but they don;t tell you that part !!

well, I think I'm on the Pro's side... a pro isn't a personal trainer, they aren't a health ed teacher, they aren't even a role model...

A pro to me is a person that is at a very elite level and therefore can make monetary profit from their combination of genetic gifts, motivation, and work ethic to become a marketable commodity...

So if you consider their main goal is to either sell a product by means of sponsorship and to attract attention from sponsors by winning competitions, to me that says, you shouldn't trust a damn thing they say. They have to sell products, they have to keep themselves head and shoulders above the rest...

I think to expect the advice of a "pro" to be anything but rediculous is to expect a hot rod team to disclose every aspect of their engine tweaking prior to a race...

ok people want it know it take to be not a pro but rather an amateur. I will tell you. I helped a freind 38 yrs old 220 at 6% body fat come in to nationals at 198 ( considering he had to sit under a hot shower for almost an hour to drop 5 lbs of water to make weight ). I helped him lay out his supplement program. Number 1 he was taking enough stuff for a horse (2000 mgs a week combined). Since he was older and I wanted to take a healther approach and money no object I suggested gh. What I did I cut his dosages nearly in half and he did the diet on his own. He went from 220 to 230 at 5% bf in a matter of 6 weeks. This was first using gh. This brought us to 6 weeks out from nationals. his caloire at this time was between 5-6, 000 calories a day time doing cardio an hour a day. (he was old school) we switched up his supplments and kept the gh, in and added t-3 at min dosage just to keep his body processing the large amounts of food he was consuming. We switch over to cutting agents but dosages remained combined (900-1000 mgs) vs his usual 1500 to 2000 weekly. The Gh was at 6 ius a day (2 ius split 3 times a day), t-3 was at 50 mcgs for now and (will increase as the contest approaches ). 4 weeks out from contest time he was 220 at 4% bf, tissue paper skin, striated glutes, and was only 5'7. A week before contest he was 210 and we were worrying he hasn' going to makes it (still 5500 caloires a day). He got down there and was 8 lbs over and then, he knew what he had to do to make weight any way he could. He was one of the hardest ones in the class by far. He went through quater turns and this is what he heard "thank you and see ya next year" he did not even make the top 15 cut. Ok now lets look at money spent for a whole 1 minutes of glory. $3,000 for gh, 1,000 for plane and hotel, chem was $1500-2,000 for 16 weeks cycle. Food thats another story. ASk your self this "WHY?" for fun. and this was done on a scaled down level vs what he was going to do with no sponorship ...People that compete need to think about this strongly, Women OMG differnt story. Entry fee $125 dollars costumes and outfits (200-? each) shoes, hotel rooms, airfare, 'supplements". these are just some things to ponder strongly

definition of pro- A human specimen that does what it is told and never questions reasons why. Majority of bodybuilders are very smart, but there are some that just do as they are told to be the best that they can be. Again to each is there own and I do admire their displicine, but i hope the future of Pro bb goes back to the classic lines with a balnce of mass and symmrety.

ooh looks like I started a good conversation.

I've been training now long enough to know what works for me and what is b.s. You guys are right about the "cola" they must be using. In my last contest phase I did everything way off--1-2hrs cardio a day and weights 2-3 days a week with supersets. My energy was zero and my body was fighting me every step of the way. I just can't see how some of these women "maintain" just doing ****loads of cardio, no carbs, light weights...yeah right!!! I am glad I learned the truth, that it takes a CLEAN, balanced diet, intense training and VARYING amounts of cardio to achieve the look I want.

Well, not to be condescending (especially since i can't even spell that damn word) but isn't the definition of professional

"participating for gain or livelihood in an activity or field of endeavor often engaged in by amateurs"

so, yes, I think female Pro's make money... I don't think they are paid like professional bball, football, hockey, or basketball player, but they do compete for cash prizes and also I would guess most successful professionals are endorsing something or other to make some cash... also workout videos are another means to make money from your competition success...

    Am i that naive?
    Are you kidding me????
