    Protein before work out?

    Hello...

I have been taking a protein shake (whey/ low carbs) before my wk outs and then one before bedtime. I recently read that Protein shakes are no good before your wkouts becasue it causes you to bloat. How is this?

I would say a protein drink 45-60 minutes before your work-out is fine, you do not want your gut to be digesting anything while you're working out.

Don't forget, immediately after your work-out is the most important time to have a protein shake.

if you're looking for energy in your work-out have a carb drink, not a protein drink.

    I recommend this one: http://www.bulknutrition.com/?products_id=136

hmmm what kind of whey protein do you have??
some with tons of fillers and lactose bloat me bad.

alsoo if your having a shake before bed make SURE to add some healthy fats to it to slow digestion.

Let me re-phrase my statement. I agree with you 100% if you are referring to a shake containing just protein. Pre workout could be equally or more important to get in protein, but you would also want to include carbohydrate and possibly EFAs.

Right, you mean a protein drink with carbs for a PW insulin spike? If so, yes that one debatable, currently I am not using any carbs PW, but I do drink a carb drink during my WO. My PW shake is pure whey with water, glutamine and creatine.

Hey Cinnabon. I think like Prince said, take it 45 min before training. I used to down it right before and I would feel bloated and hard to train. Also, different brands do different things with my body, find one that works well for you! I use Optimum Nutritions Whey. Good luck!

I still hate drinking a shake or eating anything for that matter within an hour or two of starting my workout i like working out on an empty stomach better. Plus with all the water i drink during the day i gotta pee a million times at the gym, so a shake on top of that pre workout just makes it worse.

p.s. cinnabon-is that your pic? WOW if it is

You pretty much summed it up Prince. Postworkout, I see no reason that carbs are necessary since you will get an insulin spike anywho. I hate drinking during my workout so I intake a pre-workout shake with carbs and protein so aminos are available during my workout and immediately after.

Carbs are for the spike but would any source of fat be a no no after a workout? I thought you wanted fast acting protein rather then slow absorbing?

how does insulin "spike" with out causing a substantial increase in serum glucose levels ?

protein(s) do not cause insulin to spike
