How do you guys add sweetener to your oatmeal?

I throw my sweetener in the water I cook the oatmeal with. Should I add it after cooking instead? I have no idea, this is how I've been doing it for three years. Three to four packs each bowl of oats.

    Peace.

    3-4 packs? omg!!!
I use 1.5 and that on a LARGE bowl, usually only 1 pack of splenda. I sprinkle it on after its done cooking, add a lil vanila extract, stir and eat!

Jen, do you recommend that I pour the Splenda on after cooking and stir it with a whisk? Problem is I use psyllium in my oats which makes it thick and hard to stir.

So does anyone know the differnce between adding it before and after? I notice that when I add just one pack to raw oats in my shake it tastes a helluva lot sweeter than when I add four in the cooking water to the same amount of oats in the morning. Where on earth does the sweetness go? Does it evaporate? Haha.

    Peace.

Premo - you seem to have one of the best nutrition plans of all the posters on this site, even if a little "off-the-wall" sometimes. :-) You also have great discipline in your eating habits. Therefore, I don't understand why you need to sweeten your oatmeal. It tastes very good without any help from the sweetners. A handful of walnuts adds flavor and omega-3 fatty acids at the same time. When they're in season, fresh blueberries are a great topping and they contain a plethora of vits and minerals. And a banana gets the job done when bulking. Just eat the oatmeal - who needs sweetners?

Downtown, thanks for the kind words, but really sweeteners are my crutch, without them I would collapse and go on insane cheat meals, haha. They are probably the only thing that keeps me eating well 24/7, 365, with no cheats (my cheats are merely eating a lot more of the healthy food that I eat daily). I couldn't imagine having oatmeal without my Splenda, and that is my achilles heel, I guess.

So Greek, my fellow Splenda fiend, how many do you put in YOUR oatmeal?

    Peace.

I ate oat bran with no sweetener today (ran out, and was too lazy to go buy some). It was actually really good. I cooked it with some cinnamon sticks/ banana essence and topped it with a teaspoon of ground cinnamon.

Premo, I hear you man! If a little Splenda keeps you on track, go for it. Even if you require a lot of it, it has to be a good trade-off. Same goes for you Greek Chic, and all you other Splenda fans. Sounds like a good way to satisfy the sweet tooth.

It appears I'm in the minority here. I have never consumed Splenda, or any other sugar substitute. Maybe if I did, I wouldn't crave those fantastic muffins at my favorite local coffee shop.

1/2 cup of oatmeal mixed with 1 cup of water and nuked until slightly before oatmeal rises over the edge of my bowl, add 1 pack of splenda, let cool for a minute or two usually works for me : )

Same here DG. I have my two bowls of oatmeal every morning, no sweetners added, and love it. When upping calories, I'll add a banana.

A while back I bought a box of Fiber One cereal a lot of people rave about. I was surprised at how sweet it was. When I realized it has NutriSweet added, I almost barfed.

Skib, you only eat 1/2 cup every morning? Whoa. I have to have at least 1 1/2 cups or I'm hungry for the rest of the morning.

I mix plain 5 min oatmeal w/ 1/4 of a pack of instant cinnamon & spice flavor with a little cold water. It tasts like an oatmeal cookie. I don't like to cook it to mushy. I like it kinda crunchy.
