Do any of you eat power bars on a regular basis. I know there not the best for you and semi low in protein but dam I can buy 4 power bars to one of the other protein bars. I was thinking about having one pre workout. What dose everyone think.

I have a Powerbar ProteinPlus once and a while.
they got 24 grams of protein. Also like those powerbar gels that have maltodextrin and caffein in them. |

I think bars are garbage... real food is much better. even a shake would be a better option! you can make your own MRP easily and far more nutritious

All protein bars are not alike... and I hardly think anyone can classify them all as garbage...
I know they are processed and all, but 200-300 calories with quality protein, amino acids, and vitamins and minerals that can be stowed in the glove box of your car or the bottom of your breifcase for months at a time is a flexibility you can't beat... Of course, as someone great once said... "man cannot live by protein bars alone" but the fact of the matter is there are some decent protein bars that are great if you're in a fix for some nutrition... keep an eye on the fat/saturated fat and sugar content... I recommend Protein Plus from power bar or some of the Met-Rx varieties... I prefer my protein powder+oats shakes at home, but I'm a travellin' man and I don't have the time to precook all my meals... and I'm unwilling to let my appearance/training suffer because of it... Let's face it, if you're disciplined, a protein bar here and there will make a negligable difference in your progress whether bulking or cutting... competition prep maybe the only exception... I'm not sure which is healthier, trying to get down to 5% bodyfat or eating protein bars...
Are you kidding me????

Didn't the inventor of the Powerbar die of a Heart Attack last night at age 51. Seriously

Well, I find them garbage too. Quality protein??? As if!! Everytime a bar is tested for "Quality Protein" it fails.
Yes, they are better if your in a time crunch than fast food but carrying around a baggie of protein powder and fiber one cereal doesn't take up much more room than a protein bar. |

Well I was at wal-mart tonight and I found a killer deal. I found these low carb protein bars with 22 grams per bar for 80cents a piece. I know that they are not the best for you but it helps sastify a sweet tooth sometime. 0 grams of sugar in those bars as well. So if these bars keep me from cheating then I think they are worth it. I agree with mayo on this one. The bars were 2dollars a bar but I got them for less than half the price.

its not JUST the poor quality protein but the JUNK carbs... tons of artificial sweetners(these are terrible for you).
ever read the labels? hydrogenated everything, fillers, gums, glycerlin and on and on. PERSONALLY they are terrible for you. Hold da Mayo - nanh I'll forgive you.. I suppose! ![]()

Well, they can't be that good for you. Powerbar inventor and founder Brian Maxwell just died of a heart attack at age 51.

i am rather disappointed in some of these posts;
1. some wish to dismiss a guys' death as being caused solely by his ingestion of powerbars. The guy just died of a heart attack. There is no basis to think that powerbars or protein bars contributed to this one person's death any more than his ingestion of milk or whey protein did. or maybe his past of running marathons caused his heart attack. Maybe that stressed his heart out more than anything else . or the fact that he was married contributed as it has been shown that marriage is strongly correlated with dying of a heart attack . 2. Calling protein bars garbage when the real garbage bares are oh henry / caramel / snickers bar etc . This is an extreme view for some of you to take. They may not be "healthful" in the same sense as bean spouts and alfalfa yet they are not garbage and to be lumped in the same category as candy bars is to take an extreme position. I always find it amusing to see "snickers' bars adv on television as being a good snack for people. let's see; 20 grams of fat, 30 grams of sugar and 2 grams protein. yup, there's a meal... What many of you find repugnant about these bars is the false advertising and suspect (criminal?) false labeling of these bars. Detour bars are so sweet that they must have more than the stated carbs. In fact they test out as having more as well. so it is with the Tri o plex bars. The food industry allows great leeway in what is on the label so it isn't really criminal; more like wishful thinking on the company's part. they are then given several chances to revise their labels but in the meantime, 100 000 bars with the wrong label are already out there. it may take years for the corrections to show up on the shelf. glcyerine is a strange ingredient indeed. Yet i remember making 'frogs' using a derivative of glycerine instead of butter years ago. i will almost certainly die of a heart attack at some point. But for a person to dismiss my entire life with the unfounded comment that " oh, those garbage protein bars he ate killed him" is unkind and unjust. Jim FIxx ( long distance runner ) died of a heart attack as well even though he promoted running as being healthy and contributing to a long life. People slandered the guy when he died even though his entire family had heart disease and he out lived his father by 5 or 6 years. The original post asked for people's opinion on powerbars protein bars in general and that's what he got. I think that everyone knows by now that the bars DO NOT contain what is stated on the label. Instead of 24 grams you may get 18 or 20. Instead of 26 grams or 0 grams of carbs ( this is impossible ), you are most likely getting 30 or 40. There really is no such thing as a garbage food although tim hortons double double with a boston cream filled donut ranks up there; HOwever there is in fact a garbage diet. |

I read through the links and I didn't find one statement even hinting at the quality of the protein in the bars...
Also, I've never purchased a bar with anything hydrogenated... I've tried maybe 6-10 different varieties... Just like our meals during the day, the nutrient breakdown of the bars varies which is actually a good thing... sometimes you want a bit of an insulin spike with your nutrition... sometimes you don't... One of those studies posted up above wasn't even about protein bars, but energy bars and the group studied was NON ATHLETIC WOMEN... and stated in the study... they even admitted the information can really only be applied to other NON ATHLETIC WOMEN... I can see some of the points... I mean, clearly, a grilled chicken breast, brown rice and side salad is going to be better than any protein bar... BUT... they aren't the devil, SOME are garbage... SOME aren't!!! Use your brain, read the labels of what you buy... just like when you buy any other kind of food... And I'd still like to see some proof that the protein in the better bars out there is inferior to say 100% whey powder shake protein...
Are you kidding me????

Mayo - if your willing to trust the protein bar manufacturers then you can go right ahead. I've seen enough evidence that the label claims are wrong and I won't waste my money on such garbage save for a treat.
My point in this thread was to show that protein bars are not all that they are cracked up to be. |

when i wrote "By Now", that is in reference to the studies and reports that you quoted. i was not talking about the people that you meet, when you are walking down the street each day! ( sung to a happy tune
). I am surprised quite often by the number of people who don't know that whey protein is an off shoot from cheese production. by what standard or criteria do you define "good for you"? Hold da mayo has asked this as well. What definition are you using to pass judgement on quality of protein or "healthy" or " bad for you". it's all up in the air. i am not suggesting that these things are healthy or unhealthy. you believe them to be not healthy or at least not good for you. why? WE have now discovered that the bars are not what the advertisements and labels suggest. Is this your main beef as if so, then you will find many supporters of that position. perhaps beef is not a good word.... |

IMO...I think bars are probable at the bottom of the list of things that are good and healthy for ya....In other words use them as a last resort.
- just my 2 cents - |
