    Dr. Bernstein Diet

I know this is a fitness and Bodybuilding forum, so this type of dieting wouldn't typically apply. But there are a lot of knowledgable people here, and I was hoping for some feedback about this diet.

My Father-in-law is a Type II Diabetic and is a little over weight. This diet has been getting alot of publicity in the News Recently, but I am skeptical and concerned about the diet, although I don't know much about it.

It is a very low Calorie diet/lo carb diet (less than 1000 cals) with 3 time a week injections of Vit B12 and Vit B6. To supposedly help with the mobilization of Fatty Acids.

Any feedback or Information on this diet would be appreciated.

    Thanks in Advance

Too low cals. At that many cals I'm sure he's not getting any EFA's. A constant low carb diet as we all know is not the best idea. His metabolism is going to slow down the point that he will not only be in starvation mode but when he does come off this diet he will gain alot of weight back and probably gain more fat than he started with.

A good diet for people with TypeII would be a diet that is 1G carbs per pound of BW and keeping those carbs coming from slow burning ONLY. Keeping fruit very low if any. Make sure he gets a good amount of EFA's. This diet is awful and I haven't even seen what can be eaten on it yet

Oh I know it is awful Jodi!

That is why I am concerned, just trying to build up some info to present to him, so he knows what he is getting into.

Dr. Bernstein, Claims that Blood sugar levels are different in Diabetics and the GI index doesn't apply properly. I don't know the exact details, trying to do some research

I am also worried about toxicity with these vitamins being injected

I'm not up on the vit injections. Maybe Dr. Chiro would have a better answer for that one for you. Seems overkill to me though.

I read about a lady who did this diet in a magazine-she gained almost all the weight back after she went off the diet. She was eating 900 cals a day, Id be hungry!!! They also did pee tests on her and would know if she ate ANYTHING that wasnt on the diet! I think this Dr is making a lot of money, with just a low cal diet.

The problem is that people get really excited by this type of diet since it produces short-term effect, not long-term effect. 1000 cals ? It is dangerous.
