    grocery list

What do you guys typically buy? I'm in need of ideas. What can I substitute for whole wheat pasta and brown rice? I'm not a fan of either one.

I wasn't a fan either....but trust me, you get use to it. I love brown rice now....I even love my oatmeal plain!

Plus, Jodi made a grocery list a while back....just do search.

What do you like to eat now? I mean like to eat, not "eat because you have to."

And what do you object to in whole wheat pasta and brown rice? Whole wheat pasta, I must say, varies widely by brand. They're all more or less chewy, but some are a bit cardboardy. I like the plain common Healthy Choice the best of the ones I've tried, myself. (Actually, I like a recipe for homemade the best, but it is kind of a pain to get out the pasta machine.)

Brown rice tends to turn out best in a rice cooker. It always seems gloopy in the pot to me. Brown basmati is very good; it has a great flavour, and turns out drier and lighter than a lot of other sorts. The Lundberg blends are also tasty, though a bit pricey.

Me and Premo, for two, are big fans of barley as a grain -- but it's extremely whole-grain and chewy -- if that's what you're not quite liking. (If you did want to try it though, you don't want pearled barley, which is the "white rice" of barley. Rather, you'll want "hulled" barley (the whole grain) or "flaked" or "quick-cooking" barley (the same thing) which is -- you guessed it -- rolled like oats. Both these are available mostly at health-food stores.)
