the whole "dont eat past 7pm" or late in the day claim is one of the most over rated myths. I always schedule my last meal an hour or so prior to bed. Typically it just consists of fiberous veges(I eat a ton...), healthy fats and protein. However if I train late in the evening, as so occurs on occasion, I consume complex carbs and protein... YES before bed. My body will use this to replinish lost glycogen stores and repair muscle tissue. Eat according to activity level.
Dont be afraid to eat later in the evening, as long as your not eating above maintenance intake then you should have no worries in gaining fat. Unless of course the majority of your calories were at night and you ate minimal all day long.

to get a bit hungry.
