    Looking for a Diet/Lifting Recomendation...

    Hi all.

I'm a newbie here and to lifting. I've been yo yo low carbing for a while trying to lose weight. I am currently finishing up my 3rd week in Phase 1 of BodyRX. I am getting stronger with the lifting program, but am not losing any weight.(actually gaining - which I hope is muscle...)

I am 6ft, 2in and weigh 252lbs. Scale says I have 30% body fat on me. Looking at the tire around my midsection, I think the scale is correct!

I've been reading about carb cycling and since I am use to low carb diets, cycling doesn't look too tough since I'm use to 20 grams a day... I have been loving the BodyRX plan since I can eat more carbs than normal.

Since I am new to the whole lifting thing, is there a lifting program that would work better for me to lose fat? BodyRX does it in phases and I am in the "Build muscle" phase. 3 more weeks of it. Then I move to sculpting, then to fat burning. I'm thinking that fat burning might be a better start for me. I don't really care if I bulk up or not. Main goal is to lose fat.

As far as my diet, would a carb cycling program be best? Or is there something better for fat loss?

Any recomendations are appreciated. If there is a step by step program to follow, the would be a world of help!

    Thanks in advance.

    Mike

Any diet that provides a caloric deficit will work. I personally do not like low carb diets and carb cycling is not really a low carb diet. You have 1 day every few days that is a no carb day but the other days are much different. Low carb day is 1G carb per pound of bodyweight and High carb days is all the healthy carbs you can possibly eat in 4 meals. So I would never say that carb cycling is a low carb diet.

If you are interested more in it, please read the sticky at the top of the forum called Guide to cutting or there is a link in my signature. In there is TP's articles on Carb Cycling with a complete outline of the diet. Good luck

Thanks Jodi. I read your articles last night. I didn't mean to imply that carb cycling was low carb... I just meant that no carb days wouldn't be that tough for me since I am kind of use to it already.

What ratio would you suggest? I was aiming for 50/30/20, but not sure if that is too much fat.

Would you also recommend the standard cycle or something different?

    Thanks for the reply.

Personally I do not care for low carb diets. I really think they screw you up to the point that your body doesn't know how to process carbs anymore. If you would prefer a ratio oppose to a planned diet like carb cycling, I'd suggest 40/40/20, that's 40% P, 40% C, 20% F. It's up to you though but if you've been low carbing it for long, I'd suggest giving your body a break.

Thanks Jodi. I have to re-read TP's plan. I forgot that it covered Protein and Fat as constant. I think I figured I'd do 1.2g protein per lb. or 300g/day. Carbs will take care of themselves.

I think I'll give Carb Cycling a whirl. What cycle is recommended? No/High/Low/Repeat?

I just signed up for Max-Op?? Is that a good lifting program for a beginner?

I think Max-OT is very good for everyone, especially beginners. It's very basic and straightforward. It's long, but read the whole thing.

I'm actually reading it now... Page 8 of 22... I'm guessing it's going to suggest supplementation. Can I do it with out the supplements?

yeah, it's there to sell AST products so you'll be barraged with a ton of recommendations to use their supplements. I don't believe their information is incorrect in any what, however you do not really need any supplement unless you're trying to reach your goals faster. The #1 most important thing for your goal is just a healthy diet/training lifestyle. Also, keep in mind that most of their diet/supplement suggestions are meant for bulk.

well, actually there are a few supplements i would recommend:

    • whey protein - fast, easy, cheaper way to get protein
    • meal replacment packs - when consuming 6 meals a day, these just make life a whole lot easier
    • multivitamin - you need your vitamins
    • fish oil - good (perhaps necessary) stuff, read about it here: http://www.bulknutrition.com/?ingredients_id=19
