    Question Caffiene and Carbs!

For me, this is a great pre-workout meal - caffiene and carbs. Damn, it feels good. It improves my workouts tremendously if I have caffiene and carbs about an hour before the workout. The problem is, I'm not talking about low glycemic carbs here. No, I'm talking about things like bran muffins from my local coffee shop - high GI stuff that also contains tons of bad fat.

Other than this problem, I eat fairly well. Six meals a day, begining with oatmeal and whey. Usually eggs or chicken for meal two. A couple meals with grilled chicken and veggies and a meal or two of salmon, or other fish, with veggies. I'll have low GI carbs, sweet potato or brown rice, at the post workout-2 meal, after my liquid post workout-1 meal. Lean red meat from time to time. Lots of fish oil and vits.

Tell me - just how bad is this habit I have developed of having high GI carbs with fat pre-workout? I've tried oatmeal, but it's just not the same. What do you guys and gals do pre-workout for energy?

I can understand some simple carbs right before a work-out, or even complex carbs an hour or so before a work-out, but a fat loaded muffin from the coffee shop?

if you are happy with the results from the pre workout bran muffin then god bless, but i think there are betting things to have. personally, i wouldn't have a bran muffin in any of my 6 meals...not even as a cheat

    thats just me

    Ditto,
If you think it's helping, then it probably is.
Even if it's a psycological thing.

I'm becoming dependent on a drink we have here called "V" (pre-workout).
I'm sure there are better ways (with less sugar) to get caffene,
but nothing else feels quite the same for me.
Maybe it's all in my head, but that doesn't matter does it?

    If not actually, then potentially.

    Thanks for the replies, guys!

Prince and Rockcrest, I know I shouldn't be eating that junk at any time - so thanks for telling me what I needed to hear. The first time I did it because I was totally drained from working and had no energy to work out. Had to meet someone at the coffee shop between work and working out. Had a muffin in desperation and forced myself to go to the gym. Unexpectedly, I had an energized workout. So I had to try it again the next day. Another superb workout. I'm sure it's the high GI carbs that are energizing my workouts. I'll try to find a substitute before I put on ten lbs of ugly fat. Any suggestions?

Art. thanks for the words of encouragement. I think I'll try to find a better way to fuel my workouts.

Or maybe you can buy some low fat muffins to at least not get as much damage?
    I can do it

    I WILL be a size 5.

Thanks Greek! That's what I need to do - lose the fat, but keep the carbs and caffeine.

I think the carbs and caffeine complement each other well. It appears that neither works as well without the other. I'll have to do extensive research here to prove my hypothesis that the synergy of caffeine and high GI carbs are the key to improved workouts for me. This calls for a double-blind study. Will somebody punch me in both of my eyes?

Nice combination there, NCgirl! I think you blacked both my eyes. Thanks, I needed that! Now that I'm doubly blind, I'm ready to begin my study.

I decided to post a problem in this thread because it seemed like a god idea (everyone was saying what they though of Downtown guy's high GI food + coffee morning ritual)...I have a problem...well, it's not really considering I'm 16. I find that the only way I can gain mass/ muscle is by eating junk. With 9% bodyfat, my metabolism revs like a mofo, and eating "healthy","clean" food just aggrivates it. I need cookies/ice cream/ pizza to slow it down. Not that that works...I know that this won't always be the case for me, so I will hav to soon get out of the habit, but I was wondering if it was harmful to me, right now...

In all honesty my advice is that if you can maintain a body you're proud of with the diet you're on, then more power to you...Remember that eating clean isn't just to provide body fat gain, it's for general health...What use is there of looking graet from a cosmetic standpoint when you're loading your body with processed crap and junk that doesn't benefit bodily functions or health in general

    Peace.

"Remember that eating clean isn't just to provide body fat gain" - body fat gain? The point of my diet is to gain body fat.

Jaim, I'm sure Premo did not intend to say "body fat gain." Instead, he probably meant to say "lean body mass gain", or words to that effect.

Right on with your other comments, Premo. I originally started working out and eating healthier because I physically felt bad, not because I physically looked bad. Not that I didn't look bad too. I did! And it's great to look much better. But what really turns me on is hitting the shower in the morning feeling so fantastic that I find myself shouting in James Brown style "I feeeeel good!"
