Personally, Im not a fan of low carb diets, although I buy some low carb products just because of sugar content. I'd go for a healthy low calorie diet, worked for me.

Jgirl, I think there is a lot of different opinions as to wheather a very low carb diet is good or bad... my boyfriend lost 12kgs in 6 weeks on it ( admitedly we didn't check how much of it was water and how much was the fat loss), and his cholesterol and sugar levels dropped really a lot. But the thing is I sincerely believe that it's a nutritional plan you can stick with for very long. No one I knew could stay on it for more than a year, and the moment they started eating carbs again they piled on the lost kilos very fast...

Your dad would be better off substituting empty carbs ( sugar, white flour etc..) with complex carbs - whole wheat flour, brown rice, oats, sweet potato,etc... and of course watch the total caloric intake.

Personally, I have a bad perception of the low carb craze. IMO it is a bit hazardous and when you go back on carbs you normally gain much if not all of the weight in water back, plus your brain needs carb energy to survive too, go figure.

    Well said!

I personally would not advocate a no carb diet. Training or not, your body requires a certain amount just for your brain and hormones to function properly.
For long term goals and better chances of actually sticking to the diet, why not stress a balanced diet of lean protein, healthy fats and complex carbs. This will ensure proper nutritional needs as well.

I tried a ckd 3 or 4 times and could not stay on it, even though I did a carb refeed once a week. After a while the food got boring. You can't live on sausage, eggs, salami, cheese and ribs and not get bored. I started craving oatmeal and whole wheat bread. The alternative is to spend all your free time in the kitchen whipping up these interesting no-carb meals. Twenty eight of them every week (4 meals x 7 + shakes)? I think not.

Low-carb doesn't have to be no-carb. Anything less than 30-40% of calories is considered low-carb, according to one writer (an MD). My ideal diet has a ratio of 40/35/25 p/c/f with the carbs coming from oatmeal, vegs, whole grain, etc. Unfortunately I'm in a mental slump right now and am eating anything I damn well please. And my pants' waistbands constantly point this out.

My niece is on a low carb diet and looks like hell. Plus she is prone to go on and off it and when she does she has been know to binge on carbs like I have never seen before. I would never go on a low carb diet.

low carb diets aren't for those who enjoy eating carbs...once they get off they will just binge
